Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the fifth night of Chanukah, the eighth and twenty-seventh of Teves, as well as the telegram and its enclosures. Thank you for the good news regarding the farbrengens.
In general, there should have been much greater effort regarding what is unfortunately and most painfully lacking among the students: their connection to the Yeshiva and its matters (although, for now, I have not clarified whether this lack is only in connection to the Yeshiva or also in Torah study). This deficiency is evident from the letters received, even though they obviously try to conceal it as much as possible; it can be discerned between the lines.
It is clear that increased effort is absolutely necessary here because ultimately their time in Yeshiva is very limited. Their desired mission is that they should be "moist enough to moisten others," not just save themselves—this is understood. And if in general Chassidic conduct means one does not rely on things happening automatically (as brought in several talks by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal), how much more so when we must make them internal people—internal even in their influence on others. There is no need to elaborate further on all this.
It is understood that my intent here is directed at all members of the Yeshiva administration—and not only them but also those involved in material matters—since it can be said that this too affects how students relate to the Yeshiva.
And regarding all this it is said: "It is not hidden nor distant... for it is not in heaven," and our Sages teach that even if it were in heaven one would need to strive to ascend there just to fulfill the Creator's will. How much more so since "the matter is very close to you—in your mouth and heart—to do it." This applies here as well, especially since the merit of our holy leaders assists you in this sacred work...
Summary
The Rebbe urges all staff—spiritual and material—to actively foster a deep connection between students and both their Yeshiva and Torah learning. This mission requires conscious effort and cannot be left to happen automatically; with dedication and help from above, success is attainable.
