Recognizing Good Amid Lacking and Serving Hashem with Joy

ב"ה, כ"ד טבת, תשט"ז ברוקלין.
The Rebbe writes that while the world is not perfect until Moshiach comes, we must not let what is lacking overshadow our gratitude for the good we receive from Hashem. Joy and a positive spirit are essential for success in rectifying deficiencies and serving Hashem.

Blessings and peace!

I am responding to your letter from the first of Rosh Chodesh Teves. Of course, I did not intend by my previous writing to frighten you into not writing anymore, nor did I mean to show you that everything in this world is in perfect order and completeness. Until Moshiach comes, there is no perfection in material matters, as explained in many places in the holy books.

What I emphasized in my letter is that the areas where there are deficiencies should not cover up or diminish our gratitude to Hashem Yisbarach for the portion of good that each person receives from Him in great measure. Secondly, the way to correct these deficiencies is not through despair (giving up) or even a fallen spirit (discouragement); not only does this not help, but on the contrary, it makes the work of correcting things harder.

However, when one is joyful (cheerful and uplifted), then service of Hashem Yisbarach in general—and specifically the work of correcting—comes with great success, as we also see from practical life. It is well known the saying of my father-in-law, my revered teacher and master zatzal: A soldier going to the front must march with a joyful song; this greatly increases his chances of victory. If this is so in a physical war, how much more so regarding matters we wish to accomplish according to the will of the Creator of the world—in which ultimately victory for good is assured, as explained at length in many places in Chassidus.

I hope you will accept the guidance of my father-in-law as mentioned above: to act and be joyful—cheerful and uplifted—and may it be G‑d's will that everyone should have reason to be joyful.

With blessings for good news and success in all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that even when facing lack or difficulty, we must focus on gratitude for what Hashem gives us. Approaching challenges with joy—not despair—brings true success both spiritually and practically.
