במענה על מכתבו מר"ח כסלו, בו כותב אשר עד עתה למד בישיבה כל היום כולו, ובהתחשב עם המציאות לפי דבריו רצונו לצאת מהישיבה עתה ולהכנס ללימוד אומנות מהנדס, והנהו בגיל עשרים שנה, ושואל דעתי בזה.
והנה אם לקולי ישמע ובהתחשב עם המציאות, לפי דעתי אני והשקפתי במשך שנה הבאה יסיח דעתו מכל וכל מבקשת תכלית בלשון העולם, וילמוד תורה בלי חשבונות ובהתמדה ובשקידה גדולה וכעבור שנה זו הנה אז יעמיד עוד הפעם את השאלה, ואם ירצה לשאול את דעתי גם אז בזה, מובן אשר בעזה"י אודיעו גם זאת.
ואל יאמר שאי אפשר לו ללמוד להסיח דעת מהנ"ל כיון שהרעיון מבלבלו, כי אין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונו, ובפרט וביחוד שכל המאמין בגלוי מאמין ברור שהשי"ת הוא הזן ומפרנס לכל, ודוקא בחסד וברחמים בעת המתאים ובאופן המתאים, וכבר אמרו רז"ל שאין אדם יודע במה משתכר כו' ומלכות בית דוד מתי תחזור כו', הנה הושוו זה לזה, וכמאמר רבנו הזקן הידוע (אגה"ק סי' כ"ב) יש מקום לחשוב אשר המלך זקן וכסיל ושבעניניו אומן הוא, יתחפש באיצטלא של טענות מטענות שונות ואפשר יביא ראי' לדבריו גם ממאמרי רז"ל וכו' על ידי שישתמש בהם שלא במקומם, ובמילא לפעמים תכופות היפך כוונתם, וכדי למעט בלבולים האלו, שע"ז אמרז"ל אלמלי הקב"ה עוזרו וכו', יקבע לימוד בכל יום במאור שבתורה זוהי פנימיות התורה, ויזהר בטבילת עזרא, ובכל יום חול קודם התפלה (שתחלת י"ב האמצעיות שהם בקשת צרכי האדם היא חנינת דעת) פרוטה לצדקה יתן, והשי"ת יצליחו.

In response to your letter from Rosh Chodesh Kislev, in which you write that until now you have studied in yeshivah all day, and considering the reality as you describe it, you wish to leave yeshivah now and begin studying engineering, and you are twenty years old, and you ask my opinion on this.
If you will heed my voice and consider the reality, in my view and perspective, during the coming year you should completely set aside thoughts of seeking a worldly purpose, and study Torah without calculations, with great diligence and perseverance. After this year has passed, then you can raise the question again; if you wish to ask my opinion then as well, I will certainly inform you of it with G‑d's help.
Do not say that it is impossible for you to study and set aside these thoughts because they disturb you. This depends only on your will—especially since anyone who truly believes knows clearly that the Holy One, blessed be He, is the One Who sustains and provides for all, specifically with kindness and mercy at the right time and in the right way. Our Sages have already said that no one knows by what he earns his livelihood etc., and when the kingdom of Beis David will return etc.—these are equated. As our master the Alter Rebbe famously said (Iggeres HaKodesh ch. 22), there is room to think that "the king is old and foolish," and that in his matters he is an expert craftsman who disguises himself with various arguments—and one might even bring proof from our Sages' words by using them out of context; thus often their intent is reversed.
To minimize these confusions—which our Sages said require Divine assistance—set fixed daily study in the light of Torah (that is, the inner dimension of Torah), be careful with Ezra's immersion, and every weekday before prayer (since the first twelve middle blessings are requests for human needs—especially for understanding), give a coin to charity. May G‑d grant you success.
