Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter from 8/20, in which you write that you are feeling a bit better. Hopefully this will continue from good to even better, especially in these days as we approach the time of being inscribed and sealed for a good year.

What you write about looking at the world with a sense of joy is not—as you express it—hiding from the truth. Rather, it is a means to make life much easier. As is already well known—and even medical science increasingly recognizes—one's entire state, even their physical reactions and how they perceive events around them, depends greatly on the person themselves and how they take things in.

It is remarkable that among the founders of optimism in life, their own lives were often full of what are called troubles; while among pessimists there are many whose lives seemed outwardly good—nothing was lacking except inner satisfaction and inner joy.

Knowing about your father's and mother's childhoods and what they went through, perhaps this too can serve as an example, to some extent, of what was mentioned above.

Therefore it is no wonder that Chassidus—which popularizes the highest and best ideals—has as one of its fundamental ideas that in every occurrence one can find a way to serve Hashem Yisbarach (may He be blessed). In general, serving Hashem Yisbarach should be done with true joy; then it is at its fullest measure.

For the new year coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing, I wish you and all yours—a ketivah v'chatimah tovah l'shanah tovah u'metukah (to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year) both materially and spiritually.

With blessing.

The etrog has just been brought. Thank you very much.

P.S. You may also continue writing to me in Russian, even though I reply in Yiddish due to my secretary's convenience.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that optimism is not escapism but a powerful tool for living meaningfully. Our perception shapes our reality; by choosing joy—even amid challenges—we fulfill Chassidus' call to serve Hashem with genuine happiness.
