Pride in a Son's Commitment to Kippah and Jewish Values

The Rebbe writes to commend parents for raising their son to uphold Torah values, specifically his refusal to remove his kippah for a soccer game. He encourages supporting the son and suggests changing schools if necessary, viewing the situation as Divine protection.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the end of Menachem Av, in which you write about your son ... sheyichyeh, his study schedule, etc., and conclude with a question that arose because he is careful—as our holy Torah of life requires—regarding covering his head.

Fortunate is your and your wife's portion that you have raised and educated your son sheyichyeh in this path, which brings happiness both materially and spiritually. It is therefore clear how you should relate to this matter: you must strengthen and encourage your son regarding the above issue and similar ones. Especially considering that for youth, all details of Jewish law combine into one complete structure; when someone shakes or weakens even one part of this structure—whatever it may be—it automatically causes weakness and instability in the entire structure as a whole.

Particularly in this case, where covering his head prevents your son sheyichyeh from participating in a soccer match between two schools, I believe this can be interpreted as a hint from Above that they wish to protect him from some mishap G‑d forbid that could occur during this game or competition between the schools.

If it is as you wrote—that not participating in the competition makes an undesirable impression on your son sheyichyeh—it would be worthwhile for him to transfer from his current school to another one; if possible—a more observant (chareidi) school. There is no need to explain the above reason to your son; certainly after a short time he will forget about the whole issue.

On this occasion I wish to express my great satisfaction from reports of your good efforts for strengthening and developing the yeshivah ... I am certain that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal—whose name it bears—is surely arousing abundant mercy upon you and all your family sheyichyu both materially and spiritually.

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing [in the Book of Life], and with good news regarding all the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that steadfastness in mitzvah observance—even at personal cost—should be encouraged and supported by parents. Such commitment builds true spiritual strength and may serve as Divine protection from harm.
