במענה על מכתבו משילהי סיון, בו כותב אודות מר ... שי' אשר יש לו סכסוך ומבטיח שבאם יזכה במשפט ייטיב הנהגתו בעניני יהדות.
בודאי הנה יכול הוא להסבירו שלא זוהי הדרך שמתחלה רוצה שהקב"ה יתן אמון בהבטחתו וימלא בקשתו ואח"כ תהי' הברירה בידו אם לעמוד בדבורו או לא, אף שלכל אחד מישראל יש שתי נפשות נפש האלקית ונפש הבהמית, יצר טוב ויצר הרע הנלחמים בו. משא"כ אם יאמין הוא בהקב"ה הרי הכל הוא יכול ואין ח"ו מעכב בדבר, ואף אם בתור הוראת שעה ימלאו רצונו שיהי' באופן הנ"ל, אבל ידוע ידע שעליו להתנהג בשמירת המצות כמצווה בתורתנו תורת חיים ואז טוב יהי' לו ולב"ב הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.

In response to your letter from the end of Sivan, in which you write about Mr. ... shiyichyeh who has a dispute and promises that if he wins the court case he will improve his conduct in matters of Judaism.
Certainly, you can explain to him that this is not the proper path—that at first he wants the Holy One, blessed be He, to trust his promise and fulfill his request, and then the choice will be his whether or not to keep his word. Even though every Jew has two souls—the Divine soul and the animal soul, a good inclination and an evil inclination that battle within him—
Nevertheless, if he believes in the Holy One, blessed be He, then everything is possible for Him and nothing stands in His way, G‑d forbid. And even if as a temporary measure his wish is fulfilled in this manner, he should know well that he must behave in observance of the mitzvos as commanded in our Torah of life; then it will be good for him and his family both materially and spiritually.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that one should observe mitzvos out of true faith in G‑d rather than making conditional promises. Unconditional commitment brings blessings both physically and spiritually.
