Shalom u'Vrachah!
In connection with the days of redemption, Yud-Beis and Yud-Gimmel Tammuz, which we are now experiencing, it is surely unnecessary to remind you to take inspiration from these days for the entire year. It is also certainly unnecessary to explain what this inspiration is—since the matter concerns the redemption of His Honor, my father-in-law the Rebbe, it is obvious that both the inspiration and its results must fit his wishes and directives...
This also answers your claim in your letter from Yud-Beis Iyar, where you wrote that you only hold by "lema'an shemi yikaved Hashem" (for My Name's sake shall Hashem be honored). (And so there would be no doubt as to your emphasis, you specifically underlined one word out of the four.) Since this does not fit with what was mentioned above, then at least after Yud-Gimmel Tammuz this year—when there was an awakening as above—you no longer hold by this approach. It is understood that Chassidim need the aforementioned remedy... For if it were not so, and thus he would see in writing "lema'an shemi yikaved"—who is saying this? If he knew it was Hashem saying it, he would not have made such a mistake even without the aforementioned remedy.
Now, regarding "in what case does this apply," and to whom does it pertain—it applies to Michael Sar HaGadol who writes down the merits of Israel. He wants everything done without ulterior motives and not for My Name's sake; for then he can write an even greater merit—not just in quantity but also in quality. But regarding my letters to Anash in Eretz HaKodesh—my general letters which discuss activities rather than individuals—it is understood that my intent is that actions should be done. And if someone mixes in a personal motive—receiving reward in this world or the next or both together—I can accept that. Only when they ask me directly for an answer and intend to act according to my reply will I begin to consider what is better: whether it should be done for My Name's sake or for Lubavitch as a whole (which also includes individuals among Anash)...
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that our inspiration from Yud-Beis Tammuz must follow the Frierdiker Rebbe’s wishes and guidance. Even when personal motives are present, what matters most is aligning our actions with these directives and striving for sincere service.
