There Is No Justification for Violence, Even When Certain of Righteousness

The Rebbe writes that violence is never justified, even if one is completely certain of being right. He instructs those involved to seek forgiveness, fast in a specific manner, give charity, and study the relevant Iggeres HaKodesh until its message is internalized.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 13th of Sivan—it is clear how distressing the content of your letter is. Even as you describe the matter in your letter, and even if you were one hundred percent correct, this does not justify at all the act of raising a hand and certainly not more so, especially when this occurs publicly, and particularly when it happens at a chassidic farbrengen. Especially since each one of us who is associated with the Chabad community is looked upon as an example—see what a Chabad chassid is and what the guidance of Toras HaChassidus and the teachings of our holy Rebbes (of blessed memory) are. Particularly when considering the content of Iggeres HaKodesh at the end of section 25; there is no need to elaborate on such a painful matter.

If you will heed my advice: in addition to asking forgiveness as required by halachah, each one should fast; but since your occupation is Torah study, divide the fast into two half-days and give to tzedakah the value of that day's meal. Also, study the aforementioned Iggeres four or five times until its content is firmly engraved in your mind as it should be. May it be G‑d's will that you fulfill regarding this what Rambam writes in Hilchos Teshuvah 2:2: 'He Who knows all secrets will testify about him that he will never return [to this sin],' and may you ascend from this pit to a great height—to succeed in spreading the wellsprings outward with expanded awareness and to succeed greatly in learning Torah both in Nigleh and Chassidus.

With blessing, on behalf of the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that violence can never be justified—even when convinced one is right. Instead, he urges sincere teshuvah through apology, fasting adapted for Torah learners, charity, and deep study so that chassidic values become internalized examples for others.
