במענה על מכתבו מי"ג סיון, בו כותב שלומד בישיבה ובשיעור מבלי עזרת מורה, ושואל באיזה אופן, דרך ושיטה, יאחז בלימוד תורתנו הק', אם ירבה למיגרס או לעיונא, ואם ללמוד בחברותא או לעצמו.
והנה ידוע פסק רז"ל שצ"ל שני הענינים הן למיגרס והן לעיונא, והריבוי ומיעוט מאחד להשני תלוי בכשרונות ובנטית נפשו של הלומד, ואין לקבוע בזה מסמרות, אבל מוכרחת הגירסא והבקיאות בהלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים, ובפרט בארצנו הקדושה תבנה ותכונן, שנתוספו בה הלכות התלויות בארץ שמעטים הבקיאים בהם, והרי זה כל האדם את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור.
כן מוכרח בדורנו זה, וביחוד לחברי עדות הספרדים, שמסורת אבותיהם הוא ללמוד פנימיות התורה, לקבוע שיעור בלימוד נשמתא דאורייתא נסתר דתורה, שבדורנו זה נתגלתה ונתבארה בתורת החסידות. ומהנכון שיפגש עם הרה"ג והרה"ח כו' מוה"ר נחום שמרי' שי' ששונקין, שיכון רבנים פליטים רוממה בירושלים ת"ו, והוא ייעצו סדר לימוד בזה ועל ידו יוכל להפגש עם אברכים ובחורים שיש להם שיעור דומה.
ב) כבר ידוע דבר משנה שמהארבעים ושמונה דברים שהתורה נקנית בהם הוא דבוק חברים, ולכן נכון לסדר שיהי' לו לימוד בחברותא אף שפשוט שאין להבטל ח"ו מתלמוד תורה, גם אם אין חבר, וכבר אמרו רז"ל שאפילו אחד שיושב ועוסק בתורה עליו נאמר אבוא אליך וברכתיך (אבות ג' ו'), ראה ג"כ אגרת הקדש לרבנו הזקן בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר דתורה - והשולחן ערוך - פוסק בנגלה דתורה, סימן כ"ג.

In response to your letter from the 13th of Sivan, in which you write that you study in yeshivah and in class without the help of a teacher, and you ask in what manner, way, and method you should hold to in your Torah study—whether to focus on breadth (familiarity) or depth (analysis), and whether to learn with a partner or alone.
It is known from our Sages that both aspects are necessary—both breadth and depth—and the proportion between them depends on the talents and inclinations of the student; there is no fixed rule. However, it is essential to be familiar with practical halachos needed for daily life, especially in our Holy Land (may it be rebuilt and established), where additional laws apply that few are expert in. This is the essence of man: fear G‑d and keep His commandments. In our generation it is also necessary—especially for members of Sephardic communities whose tradition is to learn the inner dimension of Torah—to set aside time for studying the soul of Torah, which has been revealed and explained through Chassidus in our times. It would be appropriate for you to meet with Rabbi Nachum Shashonkin (Shikun Rabbanim Plitim Romema, Jerusalem), who can advise you on how to arrange your studies; through him you can also meet other young men who have similar study schedules.
b) It is already known from the Mishnah that among the forty-eight ways by which Torah is acquired is "cleaving to friends." Therefore it is proper to arrange learning with a partner—even though obviously one should never neglect Torah study if no partner is available. As our Sages said: even one who sits alone and studies Torah merits "I will come to you and bless you" (Avos 3:6). Summary
The Rebbe teaches that both broad familiarity and deep analysis are vital in Torah study; each person should find their own balance. Studying with a partner is ideal but not required if unavailable. Practical halachah knowledge and learning Chassidus are especially important today.
