Blessings Come After Effort, Like Rain After Plowing and Sowing

The Rebbe writes that just as rain brings blessing only after plowing and sowing, so too in life, blessings follow personal effort. He emphasizes the importance of a Jewish home as a model sanctuary, led by the wife with the husband's support, and assures that everyone has the strength to fulfill their mission.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

As you requested, I mentioned ... at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal lehe nbagam zya, for whatever each one of them needs. And since you were the messenger to bring their request, you will surely also convey to them that they were mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe and leader of Israel.

And you will certainly also explain to them what is commonly said—precisely as our Sages phrase it regarding blessing: "geshamei berachah" (rains of blessing), that first there must be plowing and sowing; then the rain brings abundant blessing. It is understood that for a Jewish man and woman—a family—this means first and foremost establishing a home that serves as an example and model of a Jewish home—a "mikdash me'at" (miniature sanctuary) in its conduct.

As is evident in practice, this depends mainly on the conduct of the woman—the homemaker—and that the husband should assist her as much as he can. It is clear that this can only be achieved when the husband behaves at home, on his way, when lying down and rising up—in such a manner that all who see him recognize he is from the seed of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov.

If this is necessary everywhere and always—how much more so in our generation! Each of us is like a brand plucked from fire; in His great mercy, G‑d left us as survivors to give life to many people. And in a land where "the eyes of Hashem are upon it from the beginning of the year to its end," such responsibility and privilege are multiplied many times over.

The Holy One asks only according to each person's ability; from the outset one is given all the strength and possibilities needed to fulfill all this completely in whatever time and place one finds oneself.

I would be glad if you inform ... about each one individually with appropriate detail.

Blessings for complete success in this mission and for good news in all these matters. M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that blessings come after personal effort—just as rain brings abundance only after plowing and sowing. Building a Jewish home requires dedication from both husband and wife; G‑d grants everyone strength to fulfill their unique mission.
