Blessings and peace to the group of young women... May Hashem be upon them and grant them life!
I received your letter some time ago, and for several reasons my response was delayed. On the threshold of the new year approaching us and all Israel for good and blessing, I am responding now—at least briefly—because the questions you raised in your letter are very difficult to answer in writing. I hope that Mrs.... will explain any points in my response that require further clarification.
All Jews are believers, children of believers, that the Creator, may He be blessed, directs the world with individual Divine Providence. It is understood that nothing at all is meaningless or without purpose. How much more so regarding humanity—and even more so for the chosen people—that each and every Jewish man and woman has a unique mission; this is not only for themselves but also for the entire community. It is easily understood by anyone with insight—and we see it tangibly—that the purpose of life is not to pursue enjoyment from fleeting worldly pleasures. Rather, "man was born to toil," so that through his effort and labor—in Torah and eternal mitzvot—he attains spiritual satisfaction, especially when he acts also for the benefit of others. This is the literal meaning of "Torat Chayim"—a Torah of life—even in this world.
It goes without saying that this does not mean one must despise worldly pleasures to such an extent as to practice self-mortification and suffer all one's days; as is well known—especially in Chassidus—the path of self-mortification is not its intent or purpose. But one must know what is primary and what is secondary. The pleasures you emphasize in your letter—which are so hard for you to part with—are not the ultimate goal; one should not make a "golden calf" out of things like movies or similar pursuits. Surely you also recognize that these are secondary or even completely empty of content.
This applies even in normal times; how much more so in our generation when emptiness and lack of substance in many "ideals" and false opinions have become openly revealed—neither money nor power have helped a person in times of distress. In our generation it is easier to see simple truth and pure service since many concealments caused by false ideas and worldly vanities confusing clear thinking have been removed.
Those among our people who survived as brands plucked from fire after the terrible destruction must see themselves as emissaries tasked not only with fulfilling their own mission but also that of all those who perished before their time.
Just as regarding Israel as a whole: those segments who kept Torah and mitzvah still exist today while those groups who strayed from the path either left no remnant or are now few in number, dwindling like withered limbs—so too with individuals: by holding fast to daily life—and especially speech and action according to Torah—a person acquires their world, even this world, since all their days are filled with meaning and bring true satisfaction.
The fundamental point resulting from all this: Torah and mitzvot have preserved Israel as a whole from destruction throughout history despite being few among nations constantly threatened with annihilation; Torah and mitzvah are also the unifying thread connecting all generations from Sinai until today.
My prayer and confidence are that each one of you will follow this path paved for us by our ancestors—and walk securely on your journey toward a happy life materially because it will be a happy life spiritually as well.
Blessings to use your strengths, talents, and inherited virtues in the struggle to remain faithful to Israel's eternity and its Torah—and also influence your surroundings toward this direction—with blessings for being inscribed and sealed for good.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that each Jew has a unique mission: true fulfillment comes through effort in Torah and mitzvot rather than fleeting pleasures. By focusing on spiritual goals and influencing others positively, we bring lasting meaning into our lives.
