במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק והקודם לו. הנה נהניתי מתוכן דבורו עם הרב כשר שי', כי גם דעתי כן הוא, היינו ביחס שלילי להצעה לעשות נסיעה לכאן. ובודאי ידועה לו הפרסומת הזולה הנהוגה במדינה זו, אשר לצערנו הגדול הנה חדרה גם לאהלה של תורה וכו', ולא רק בתמכין דאורייתא, אלא גם כו', ואשרי האיש אשר ביכולתו להשתמט מזה אפילו אם יהי' שב ואל תעשה, ועאכו"כ לזה שיכול להחליף המרץ והזמן שיתן על הנ"ל לענינים של תועלת הרבים, ובפרט באהלה של תורה, וכחלקו היפה של כת"ר, אשר זיכוהו בזה מן השמים. אף גם אם מבטיחים שישמרו מצורה מופרזה של הפרסומת הנה ברובא דרובא אי אפשר לקיים הבטחה בזה, כי אתית לקרתא אזלת בנימוסא, ואם מלאכים ממש אכלו ממש מטעם זה - הרי עאכו"כ בני אדם וכו'. וזהו טעם נוסף על בזבוז המרץ הזמן והבריאות והעצבים - ניערווין - במדה גדולה, וכמו שרואים בחוש באלו המבקרים כאן בשליחות, איזה שתהי'. ועוד כמה טעמים לחוו"ד הנ"ל אודות ההצעה, והתועלת הגשמית בשביל האנציקלופדיא התלמודית וכיו"ב, שא"א שתבוא ע"י אלו שכבר נמצאים כאן, והמשרדים הרבים - לדעתי מסופקת ביותר וביותר...

מסיבה נתעכב שילוח מכתב זה, ואמש ביקר אצלי הרב גאלד שי'. ונהניתי מאופן דיבורו ע"ד כת"ר שי'. כמובן דיבר ע"ד שאלת נסיעת כת"ר לכאן כבדרך אגב, ושאין זה ענין מפלגה כ"א בשביל כבוד התורה וכו', עניתי לו בסיפור מעשה שהי' לפני שנה ויותר שישיבת תו"ת דכאן רצתה להזמין את כת"ר לכאן לביקור איזה חדשים, ודעתי היתה בשלילה, כי אינו מתאים להבריאות. ענה שא"כ ישאלו חוו"ד רופא וחזרתי אני על דברי ודעתי.

In response to your letter from Motzaei Shabbat and the previous one: I was pleased with your conversation with Rabbi Kasher, as I share the same view—namely, a negative stance regarding the proposal for a trip here.
You are surely aware of the superficial publicity common in this country, which unfortunately has also penetrated Torah circles—not only among those who support Torah but even further. Fortunate is the person who can avoid this, even by simply refraining from action; all the more so for one who can redirect his energy and time from such matters to activities benefiting the public, especially within Torah circles. This is especially true for someone like yourself, who has been granted this privilege from Heaven.
Even if assurances are given that excessive publicity will be avoided, in most cases it is impossible to uphold such promises—when you come to a city, you follow its customs. If actual angels partook for this reason, how much more so ordinary people. This is an additional reason beyond the waste of energy, time, health, and nerves—which we see clearly among those visiting here on various missions.
There are several other reasons for my above opinion regarding this proposal. As for the material benefit for the Talmudic Encyclopedia and similar projects—what cannot be accomplished by those already here and by the many offices—I am very doubtful about this.

P.S. For a certain reason this letter was delayed in being sent. Last night Rabbi Gold visited me and I enjoyed how he spoke about you. Of course he mentioned your proposed trip here in passing and said it was not a partisan matter but rather for the honor of Torah. I replied by telling him an incident from over a year ago when Tomchei Tmimim here wanted to invite you for a visit of several months; my opinion then was negative because it was not suitable for your health. He answered that in that case they would consult a doctor; I repeated my words and opinion.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that avoiding environments with negative influences—even when cloaked in communal or Torah-related causes—is wise. One should invest time and energy where it brings true benefit to Torah and community rather than risk spiritual or physical harm.
