Mikvah Immersion Should Not Prevent Studying Chasidus

The Rebbe writes that not immersing in the mikvah should not stop one from studying Chasidus. He encourages influencing others to immerse more often, but even without this, learning Chasidus is essential and brings true spiritual vitality.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your question regarding your brother who asks you to study Chasidus with him, and your uncertainty because the mikvah is far from his neighborhood and he only immerses on the eve of Yom Kippur, so you ask whether to study with him or not.

There is no connection between these two matters; it is entirely unfounded to say that since he only immerses on the eve of Yom Kippur, this should affect studying Chasidus. This relates not only to learning Chasidus but also to bodily purity and strengthening faith in general (see Rambam at the end of Hilchos Mikvaos), the resting of G‑dliness, etc., especially when dealing with youth and those living in the Land upon which the eyes of Hashem are always upon it from the beginning of the year to its end. Therefore, you should try to influence your brother to immerse more frequently as much as possible, and at least perform the immersion of Ezra. In place of an additional purity immersion (not the above), he should study some Mishnayos from Seder Taharos—ideally from Maseches Mikvaos—which in cases of unavoidable circumstances substitutes for the additional purity immersion (not for immersion from impurity to purity).

It is self-evident that you must study with him—even before his conduct improves in this regard—Chasidus, which is the soul of Torah, its inner dimension, the Tree of Life. In recent generations this study is essential for proper observance of Torah and mitzvos as explained in Kuntres Etz HaChayim, for this learning draws vitality into the G‑dly soul so that even through it, the animal soul and body receive true life through attachment to the Tree of Life.

With blessing, in the name of His Honor our Master and Teacher Shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that lack of mikvah immersion should never prevent someone from studying Chasidus. One should encourage greater immersion where possible but must still share Chasidus regardless—its teachings are vital for spiritual life and growth.
