The Holy Soul Begins to Enter at the Time of the Bris

The Rebbe writes that at a bris, the holy soul begins to enter the Jewish body, referencing both revealed and hidden Torah. He blesses the parents and family for continued chassidic nachas and explains how mitzvos affect all spiritual worlds.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

It was with pleasure that I received the news that this Shabbos Kodesh will be the bris milah of your grandson, the son of your daughter Chana Etel. May it be the will of Hashem that his parents merit to bring him into the covenant of Avraham Avinu at a good and auspicious time, and just as they bring him into the covenant, so may they bring him to Torah, marriage, and good deeds.

It is already well known—the ruling of our master, the Alter Rebbe (the posek in the hidden dimension of Torah) and in Shulchan Aruch (the posek in the revealed dimension), in his pure Shulchan Aruch (second edition, end of Siman 4)—that with the mitzvah of milah begins the entry of the holy soul into the Jewish body. It is also known from a saying of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: As is known, five names are given to the soul—nefesh, ruach, neshamah, chayah, yechidah—and when one performs an act of Torah or mitzvah in this world below (the world of action), so too does this occur in ruach-neshamah-chayah in the worlds of Yetzirah, Beriah, and Atzilus; and then everything is sensed in yechidah as it is in the infinite worlds above Atzilus. Even someone who does not understand any aspect of this—the matter still takes effect in all worlds. And about this it is said: "uTzidkaso omedes la'ad" (and his righteousness stands forever), that he has a capital in supernal worlds and with time he will come to know about it as well (from his sichah on 19 Kislev 5693 section 17).

May it be Hashem's will that you and your wife derive much chassidic nachas from him and from all your descendants for long days and good years.

With blessings of Mazal Tov.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that a child's bris marks the beginning of their holy soul's entry into their body. Every mitzvah performed has an impact across all spiritual worlds—even if we do not perceive it—bringing lasting merit for generations.
