נהניתי לקרות בסיום מכתבם אשר בר"ח אייר מתחיל בנו יוסף יצחק שי' ללמוד בחדר. וידוע מאמר המדרש תנחומא עה"פ בשנה הרביעית יהי' גו' קדש הילולים[1] ועיין ג"כ הל' תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן בתחלתו ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיגדל לבן חמש למקרא לבן עשר וכו' כפסק תוה"ק והוא וזוגתו שיחיו ירוו מכל יו"ח שיחיו רוב נחת חסידותי.

- 1 תנחומא קדושים יד - ונטעתם כל עץ מאכל וערלתם (את) ערלתו את פריו (ויקרא יט כג), מדבר בתינוק, שלש שנים יהיה לכם ערלים (שם), שאין יכול לא להשיח ולא לדבר, ובשנה הרביעית יהיה כל פריו [קודש] (שם שם כד), שאביו מקדשיו לתורה, הילולים לה' (שם), [מהו הילולים], משעה שמהלל להקב"ה, ובשנה החמישית תאכלו את פריו (שם שם כה), משעה שהוא מתחיל לקרות בתורה, להוסיף לכם תבואתו (שם), מכאן שנו רבותינו בן חמש שנים למקרא, בן עשר למשנה

I enjoyed reading at the end of your letter that on Rosh Chodesh Iyar your son Yosef Yitzchak sheyichyeh is beginning to learn in cheder. It is well known, as stated in Midrash Tanchuma on the verse "BaShanah HaRevi'it Yihiyeh... Kodesh Hilulim" ("In the fourth year it shall be... holy for praise") [1], and see also Hilchos Talmud Torah by our master the Alter Rebbe at its beginning. May it be the will of Hashem that he grow to be a five-year-old for Mikra, a ten-year-old for Mishnah, etc., as ruled in our holy Torah; and may you and your wife sheyichyu derive abundant Chassidic nachas from all your offspring sheyichyu.

[1] Tanchuma Kedoshim 14 – "And when you plant any food tree, you shall treat its fruit as forbidden (Vayikra 19:23), this refers to a child: for three years he is considered 'orlah' (uncircumcised), unable to converse or speak; in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy (ibid. v.24), meaning his father sanctifies him to Torah study, 'hilulim laHashem' (songs of praise to Hashem), [what does 'hilulim' mean?] From when he begins to praise Hashem; and in the fifth year you may eat its fruit (ibid. v.25), from when he begins to read Torah, 'to increase its yield for you' (ibid.), from here our Sages taught: five years old for Mikra, ten years old for Mishnah."
