A Synagogue Must Actively Reach Out and Inspire Its Surroundings

ב"ה, כ"ה טבת, תשי"ד ברוקלין.
The Rebbe writes that a synagogue must not wait for people to come on their own but should actively reach out, inspire, and draw Jews in. Through this, the synagogue becomes a central source of warmth and G-dliness for the entire community, ensuring success in both material and spiritual matters.

To the worshippers of the Chevra Liadi Nusach Ari Synagogue in Brooklyn, NY, headed by the chairman, vavac"h iy"a nu"n Moreinu HaRav Eli' Moshe Shochet shlita.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive regards from you. Although there were no details, I hope that not only are the prayer services being maintained but also public Torah study sessions. In our current times, a synagogue must also be a house of study. According to the Gemara, a synagogue is called a "mikdash me'at" (a miniature sanctuary). Just as light radiated from the Beis HaMikdash to the entire world, so too must a synagogue and house of study serve as a central point from which Yiddishkeit spreads with proper warmth and self-sacrifice throughout its surroundings.

Given the demands of our time, one must not wait until someone comes to shul and only then hand him a siddur or Tehillim or another book. Rather, we must seek ways to enter his home and motivate him to come to shul to daven and to come learn. From shul he should take with him an increase in Ner Mitzvah VeTorah Or (the candle of mitzvah and light of Torah) and Maor ShebaTorah (the luminary within Torah)—which is Toras HaChassidus.

For this our holy leaders have given their lives since Liozna, Liadi, Lubavitch, and other places up until my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal in Brooklyn. We all have an assurance from the Alter Rebbe—whose festival of redemption we recently celebrated and whose yahrzeit was last night on 24 Teves—that when we act in this way we will surely succeed.

Blessings to all those who pray there and their families for everything they need materially and spiritually.

Summary

A synagogue should be proactive in reaching out to Jews in its area—bringing them into prayer and learning—and serve as a beacon of warmth and G‑dliness for its community. This active approach ensures true success both materially and spiritually.
