B"H, 25 Elul, may Hashem grant peace and blessings!
Greetings and blessings to Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a Yoshev al Medin, Ish Chai Rav Pe'alim, who leads his community with integrity, enlightens and inspires, with fruitful branches and clusters, of noble lineage etc. Moreinu HaRav Meir Abuchatzeira shlita, speaker of the holy community of Midelt may it be established for good—may you have new good tidings:
With great pleasure I read your letter from "Mi Yad Rachamim," and I hope that you—and certainly also those under your influence—are ready to participate in organizing and strengthening kosher education for boys and girls in your country and to increase Torah and glorify it. For when we act for the sake of Hashem, our efforts will succeed to see good fruit from our toil—Torah toil that is above nature (Zohar I:223b).
Regarding the theme of the day: On this day, the 25th of Elul, the world was created. Our Sages teach regarding the verse "Bereishis... es hashamayim ve'es haaretz" (In the beginning... G‑d created the heavens and the earth) that their offspring were also created then. The inner meaning is that all six thousand years of existence and their events were included in the creation of the first day; "with one utterance it could have been created," as it contains within it all ten utterances. Therefore it is clear that the ultimate purpose and perfection of creation after exile must also be included in that first day. And so it is.
The order of creation—as explained in Kabbalistic works—began with tzimtzum (contraction), which made space for worlds; then came a ray illuminating within those worlds—first building worlds and destroying them (the world of Tohu), then creating with "this is what I want" (the world of Tikkun). As our Sages hinted (Shabbos 77b): first darkness then light—"And there was evening and there was morning."
The purpose and perfection of creation is so that man does not eat "bread of shame," but rather enjoys the fruits of his own labor in his struggle with his evil inclination until he illuminates worldly darkness through his service—transforming specifically darkness into light. This is hinted at in the creation on day one: "And there was evening"—two thousand years of chaos when the world operated in darkness; "and there was morning"—two thousand years of Torah, for Torah is light; "one day"—two thousand years of Mashiach's era when difficult exile work unites evening and morning into one day, one essence: "night will shine like day," with Hashem's light being one.
This is also every Jew's general mission: to illuminate worldly darkness through mitzvah candles and Torah light until Yinnon comes—"Lifnei shemesh yinnon shemo" (before the sun his name will flourish)—and Hashem will be your eternal light.
In accordance with your request I will mention your name, your family's names, as well as those you mentioned during your visit at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe hk"m—for inscription for a good sweet year materially and spiritually.
Blessing you for a good inscription and sealing. May your father Haraha"g—the head among thousands upon thousands of Israel—shlita upon his throne also be blessed. Looking forward to good news.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that both darkness and light are essential parts of creation's purpose. By illuminating worldly darkness through Torah study and mitzvos, we fulfill our mission leading toward redemption. Each Jew can transform darkness into light by their actions.
