B"H, Tu B'Shevat, 5709.

Harav Hachassid Vechulu Moreinu Yosef Katz.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Tu B'Shevat:

a) In the maamar Taamah Ki Tov 5709 at the end of chapter 83 it says: "And they are divided into three levels: Chabad, Chagat, Nehi... they are also divided into three levels: Chachin (Chochmah Chesed Netzach) on the right; Bageh (Binah Gevurah Hod) on the left; Detiy (Daas Tiferes Yesod) in the center; all this is the aspect of Adam." The explanation is that this refers to the division of Sefirot whose function is as stated in Patach Eliyahu: "Ant Hu D'afikas... eser sefirin leanhaga behon alma'in" (You are He who brought forth... ten Sefirot to direct worlds through them). This can be approached in two ways: (1) Lengthwise—from above to below—refinement, closeness to Ein Sof blessed be He and distance from worlds. Then the order is: Chochmah Binah Daas Chesed etc., which itself is divided into three groups as in a person by way of analogy: head—Chabad; body—Chagat; legs—Nehi. (2) Widthwise—from right to left—revelation or concealment of influence; giving influence or withholding influence. Then the order of the Sefirot is Chachin (Chochmah Chesed Netzach) on the right; Bageh (Binah Gevurah Hod) on the left; Detiy (Daas Tiferes Yesod) in the center. See also Bad Kodesh from the Mitteler Rebbe about this order. But both orders are called "the manner of Adam above," because they have gradations according to intellect. Then comes a higher manner:

b) "Ki Lo Adam"—as in Shmuel I 15:29: "for He is not a man to relent," which Shmuel answered Shaul. It is not understood what novelty or answer Shmuel told Shaul. Shaul also knew that He is not a man—literally. Rather, he asked that just as he did teshuvah he should be forgiven as always with Hashem and remain king. So what is Shmuel's answer that Hashem is not a man to regret? The meaning here is that Shmuel tells Shaul that in this case we are dealing not with the level of Adam above where there are right and left sides and things depend on actions below, but rather that your kingship being given "to your fellow who is better than you" (see Shmuel there verse 28) came from a level higher than Adam above—and at this level there can be no changes: "for He is not Adam (above) to relent." See Torah Or from this week's parsha at the end of the explanation for "Zachor es HaShabbos."

c) You asked me by phone why I relay you an answer from my father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita, so quickly. There are four reasons for this: (1) What you dislike do not do to your friend—if I were asking something important to me and an intermediary delayed relaying an answer unnecessarily I would be dissatisfied. To decide if it matters to you or not—I cannot know; maybe it does. This applies generally, especially (2) regarding a mitzvah matter—in Ahavas Yisrael among them—it says in Alter Rebbe's Iggeres HaKodesh 21: everyone knows how great alacrity is etc., and Avraham Avinu's alacrity stands for us and our children forever—to show his joy and desire to fulfill his Creator's will and give pleasure to his Maker. This applies generally for mitzvos, especially (3) regarding livelihood—it has already been decided Above about livelihood; afterwards it must be drawn down below into material livelihood. On the way there can be accusations G‑d forbid—even holding it back so it remains only spiritual—which is why Birchas Kohanim and Kohanim have almonds as a sign that they draw down quickly (see Likkutei Torah end Parshas Korach; Derech Mitzvosecha from tzt"z mitzvas Birchas Kohanim). This power lies with a Rebbe—not delaying an answer along the way. This concerns answers about mitzvos or livelihood generally, especially (4): The Rebbe shlita was tired from a day's work when you called. When I went in I asked if I should leave your question for tomorrow since by your words it was not urgent—or not? He replied that I should ask immediately. From this I understood certainly not to delay.

Summary

The letter explores how Divine conduct transcends human-like changeability and highlights how promptness in fulfilling requests—especially those involving mitzvahs or livelihood—is essential both spiritually and practically.
