B"H, Eve of Rosh HaShanah, 5709.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letters in due time, and please forgive the delay in my response. This was due to the many distractions surrounding me, which is why I replied to more urgent matters first.

In response to your question regarding the discourse "Ein Omdin" from 5702 (and also from the year 5709), where it is written "koved rosh" (seriousness) and Rashi explains it as "submission and humility," you were puzzled because the word "humility" does not appear in Rashi. Similarly, this is also found in the beginning of Siman Maharid regarding Shemoneh Esrei.

See Iggeres HaTeshuvah chapter 10 and the glosses to the discourse "Ein Omdin," printed in Peirush HaMishnayos by tzt"z, where he brings Rashi's wording without the words "and humility." Therefore, it seems to me that in these discourses they interpret Rashi's intention: when Rashi writes "submission," he means submission that is associated with humility. This excludes the explanation of Ra'av (see also Peirush HaMishnayos), who interprets it as submission and awe (and in those glosses he explains according to Ra'av because of other reasons).

The difference is understood based on what is explained later in the discourse "Ein Omdin." Alternatively, one could say that submission can be a specific term (submission of the body) or a general term (submission of the body and humility of the soul), just as "adam" (man), "kochav" (star—also a specific name for one of the seven planets), or "taharot" (purities—a tractate and also one of Shas Mishnayos; see Peirush HaMishnayos introduction to Zeraim). In these discourses they explain that Rashi used "submission" as a general term whose details are submission and humility.

Even though it is explained in the discourse that submission and humility are two separate matters, how do we know that Rashi holds both are required? One could say that since the discourse concludes that both are needed as preparation for prayer (as explained there), and since one must have submission of the body before pouring out one's soul in prayer, all the more so must there be humility of the soul itself.

See Likkutei Torah on "Lo Hibit Aven," section 4, where our Sages explain: through contemplation with seriousness one will come to submission and humility. Also see there on "Ra'iti V'hinei Menorah," section 6: "to lower and subdue the physicality and materiality of the body." Similarly, see also in Derech Chaim on "Acharei Hashem Elokeichem Telechu," Siman V'Sha'at Teshuvah part one. In all these places mentioned above*, Rashi's commentary is not cited.

With this I conclude with blessings for a good inscription and sealing, a year of peace and redemption.

P.S. The kuntres for Chai Elul recently published is enclosed.

Summary

The Rebbe clarifies that true preparation for prayer involves both submission and humility. He explains that while Rashi mentions only submission explicitly, his intent includes both qualities—essential steps for sincere prayer—supported by various chassidic sources.
