Honored Haraha"g vavaha"ch iy"a esteemed and elevated etc. HaRachab shiyichyeh.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
Your letter reached me late, and afterwards I was busy with the printing of the Pesach talk of my father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita, as well as the booklet "Maayan MiBeis Hashem," and even now I do not have time to write at length because I am preparing for print the talk for Chai Elul of this year and another booklet of maamarim—all this in addition to my regular work with "Machane Yisrael" and "Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch." Nevertheless, I am writing these few lines out of respect for Torah. Enclosed, as you requested, is a copy of my letter to him from last summer—since I took it from its file, I am sending it on condition that it be returned; thank you in advance.
All this relates to the matter of Torah study being great. But what shall we do when we are spoken about regarding "great is action"? Already the Alter Rebbe wrote (Tanya Iggeres HaKodesh ch. 9): The main service of Hashem in these times before Moshiach is the service of charity, as our Sages said: Israel will only be redeemed through charity. And our Sages did not say that Torah study is equal to acts of kindness except in their days when Torah study was their main service; therefore they were great scholars in Torah. But in Ikvesa D'Meshicha (the footsteps before Moshiach)... And it is known from our Sages (Tanna D'vei Eliyahu ch. 27) on the verse 'Halo Paros L'Raev Lachmecha...' (Is it not to share your bread with the hungry...) that when you see someone naked and clothe him—that is, when you give your fellow a tallis or tefillin etc.—you give him eternal life. This is the work of outreach: bringing Jews closer to Torah and mitzvos.
And our Sages have already said (Midrash Rabbah on this section [Sifnei Gimel]): 'Throw a stick into the air—it lands on its root.' The explanation (as brought by Maharzu on Bamidbar Rabbah ch. 2 sec. 23; other explanations need clarification) is that even if it is a dry staff long separated from its root, nevertheless it can be awakened to its source and root. Also, that the staff needs assistance: disturbing its rest by lifting it from the ground and throwing it into the air—then it lands on its root.
With blessings for immediate teshuvah and immediate redemption,
Rabbi Menachem Schneersohn

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while Torah study remains important, in our era before Moshiach, acts of charity and outreach—helping others connect to Torah and mitzvos—are especially vital for redemption. Even those seemingly distant can be awakened with proper encouragement.
