Mitzvah 109 - To Immerse in a Mikveh to Become Pure from Any Type of Impurity

The 109th Mitzvah

1. The commandment in which we were commanded to immerse in the waters of a mikveh, and then we become purified from any type of impurity with which we have become impure.

2. This is as He, may He be exalted, said: "And he shall wash all his flesh in water" (Vayikra 15:16).

3. And it was received by tradition: "Water in which all his flesh can be immersed"—this is the measure of a mikveh.

4. However, if the water is spring water, then it has no minimum measure, as will be explained in the laws of this mitzvah. And among its conditions is that the water in which a zav purifies himself must specifically be spring water, as the verse says regarding him: "in living water" (Vayikra 15:13).

5. Our intent in saying that immersion is a positive commandment is not that every person who is impure is absolutely required to immerse, in the same way that anyone who wraps himself in a tallis is required to make tzitzis, or anyone who has a house is required to make a guardrail. Rather, my intent is regarding the law of immersion: that we were commanded that anyone who wishes to purify himself from his impurity can only do so by immersing in water, and then he will be pure.

6. The language of the Sifra: "'And he shall wash in water'—might I think this is a royal decree? The verse says: 'And afterwards he may come into the camp'—because of the impurity."

7. This alludes to the general principle I have explained to you: that this is only a law for one who wishes to purify himself, that he should do so—and this law is the mitzvah. But we do not obligate him to immerse specifically; rather, if he wishes to remain in his impurity and not enter the camp of the Shechinah for some time, he is permitted to do so.

8. And the Book of Truth has already explained that anyone who became impure and immersed is pure, except that his purification is not complete until sunset.

9. It is also explained in the commentary of the recipient that one must immerse with his body exposed and his skin touching the water.

10. They said: "'All his flesh'—that there should be nothing intervening between him and the water."

11. Thus, it has been clarified for you that this mitzvah—which is the mitzvah of immersion—includes the laws of the mikveh, the laws of interposition, and the laws of one who has immersed that day.

12. And this mitzvah is explained in Tractate Mikvaos and in Tractate Tevul Yom.
