Mitzvah 108 - The Laws of the Mikveh for Niddah (Purification Waters)

The commandment regarding the laws of the water of a niddah, which purifies in a certain manner and renders impure in a certain manner

1. The 108th commandment is that we were commanded regarding the laws of the water of a niddah, which purifies in a certain manner and renders impure in a certain manner, as will be explained in the laws of this commandment.

2. Know that these thirteen types of impurity, whose enumeration has preceded, are:

3. 1) Impurity of a carcass,

2) Impurity of creeping things,

3) Impurity of foods,

4) Impurity of a niddah,

5) Impurity of a woman who gave birth,

6) Impurity of a person with tzaraas,

7) Impurity of a garment with tzaraas,

8) Impurity of a house with tzaraas,

9) Impurity of a zav,

10) Impurity of a zavah,

11) Impurity of seminal emission,

12) Impurity of a corpse,

13) Impurity of the water of a niddah.

4. And their purification—each one of them—is specified in the Torah.

5. And in each of these commandments, there are many verses, laws, and conditions, as is written in the sections: "And it was on the eighth day," and in the section: "A woman who conceives," and in the section: "This shall be," and in the section: "They shall take to you a red cow."

6. And these four sections include all the verses that pertain to these impurities.

7. However, the laws of all these types and the laws of each type among them—the order of Taharos includes all of this.

8. Some types have tractates dedicated to them: Tractate Taharos, Tractate Machshirin, and Tractate Uktzin—these three tractates include only the impurity of foods, and they were composed for this purpose. But if a law regarding other impurities happens to appear in them, it is only incidental.

9. Similarly, Tractate Niddah includes all the laws of the commandments of the impurity of a niddah, a zavah, and a woman who gave birth.

10. And in Tractate Kerisos, there is also a part of the laws of the impurity of a woman who gave birth.

11. Tractate Negaim includes all the laws of the afflictions of a person, a garment, and a house.

12. And Tractate Zavim includes all the laws of a zav, a zavah, and seminal emission.

13. And Tractate Ohalos includes all the laws of the impurity of a corpse.

14. And Tractate Parah includes the laws of the water of a niddah, for impurifying and for purifying.

15. But the impurity of a carcass and the impurity of creeping things do not have dedicated tractates; rather, their laws are scattered in various places in this order, most of them in Tractate Keilim and Taharos.

16. And many questions of this type are also discussed in Tractate Eduyos.

17. And we have already explained this entire order, that is, the order of Taharos. Meaning, there is no need to consult any other book with it regarding any matter of impurity and purity.
