Section 593 — Whether the Blessings and the Shofar Blasts Are Interdependent — 4 Subsections

If the Blessings and the Soundings Prevent Each Other

1. The three blessings recited in the Musaf of Rosh Hashanah—namely, Malchiyos, Zichronos, and Shofaros—prevent each other. If one does not know all three blessings, he should not say any of them, not even the one he knows. However, the blessings of the rest of the year do not prevent each other; rather, if one does not know all the blessings, he should say the part that he knows.

2. The order of the blessings is essential. If one recited Zichronos or Shofaros before Malchiyos, or Shofaros before Zichronos, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

3. Similarly, the soundings prevent each other. If one knows how to blow but does not know how to make the teruah, he should not blow at all, for there is no mitzvah here unless he blows, makes a teruah, and blows again three times, as stated in siman 590. However, if he knows how to make our teruah but does not know how to blow the shevarim, he should blow tekiah-teruah-tekiah three times. Likewise, if he knows how to blow shevarim but does not know our teruah, he should blow tekiah-shevarim-tekiah three times. For perhaps what he knows is the teruah mentioned in the Torah, and thus he fulfills the mitzvah as it is stated.

4. The soundings that are arranged with the blessings do not prevent the blessings. If there is no one who knows how to blow, nevertheless the shaliach tzibbur should recite all nine blessings. Likewise, the blessings do not prevent the soundings; if they do not know how to recite these blessings, nevertheless they should blow the three sets. If they prayed the nine blessings with the congregation and did not blow until after the shaliach tzibbur finished the prayer, they have fulfilled their obligation.
