Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Horav

Laws for Rosh Hashanah

Collected and translated by Rabbi Chaim Wolosow

Erev Rosh Hashanah 5756

A collection of laws for Rosh Hashanah from the Shulchan Aruch Horav, with some additions from Sefer Haminhagim and Shulchan Menachem

B”H

In order to help with the review of some of the laws needed forRosh Hashanah, I collected some laws from the Shulchan Aruch Horav. (The alterRebbe’s Shulchan Aruch). I mainly took from there the הלכה למעשה (the actual ruling) for a quick review ofhis rulings in practice. The intent is for the reader to further lookinside the Shulchan Aruch for the details and clarification. ONE SHOULD NOTDECIDE ANY RULING IN PRACTICE FROM THIS KITZUR. For actual practice one shouldalways consult and follow the rulings of a competent Rabbi.

I also wanted to include in this publication some of the Chabadcustoms as they appear in Sefer Haminhagim and Shulchan Menachem.Unfortunately, I ran out of time and only got a small portion in. Iintegrated the customs into the fitting places in accordance with the order ofthe Shulchan Aruch. With Hashem’s help, we will add to this booklet in thefuture.

This booklet was compiled rather quickly and there are inevitablymany mistakes, typos, etc., we would be delighted to hear your comments andcorrections.

I pray that this booklet will inspire people to increase theirstudy and knowledge of the laws and Chabad customs for Rosh Hashanah. May webeזוכה to give nachas to our משלח, the Rebbe.

I wish everyone a

“During the two days of Rosh Hashanah, starting with one hour before the mincha prayer on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, until arvit on motzoi Rosh Hashanah, each one of you (the students, but this applies to everyone) should diligently say Tehilim day and night. For in these two days we need to refrain from weekly talk to the extreme, to sleep little and to do allot of praying and beseeching Hashem from the depth of the heart. Every free moment say Tehillim.

I wish to also make you aware that even those who smoke all year and do so even on Yom Tov, on Rosh Hashanah we hold back from this activity. It is fitting that students of Torah should be careful with this and also influence their acquaintances.

Shulchan Menachem page 84 (Following is not a quote but rather the content according to my understanding)

The blessing for the Rosh Hashanah candles is “lehadlik neir shel yom hazikoron”. (Not “lehadlik neir shel yom tov”). This change is also reflected in the blessings of Kiddush and haftorah recited on Rosh Hashanah, which concludes with the words “veyom hazikoron”.

Chapter 582

Order of prayers for the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah

1.

During the 10 days, Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur one says “hamelech hakadosh”, “hamelech Hamishpat”.

If one makes a mistake and said “hakeil hakadosh”, or if one is not sure if he said “hamelech hakadosh” – one must go back to the beginning of the Amidah.

2.

If immediately after saying “hakeil hakadosh” (kdei sheilas shalom talmid lerabo) one realizes their mistake – then one should immediately say “hamelech hakadosh” and not go back to beginning of the Amidah.

The same is true with hamelech hamishpat. If one realizes immediately after saying “melech ohev tzedaka umishpat” – then one should immediately say “hamelech hamishpat”.

However if one said “melech ohev tzedaka umishpat” and realizes the mistake after kdei sheilas shalom talmid lerabo – one does not need to start over again.

However, after stepping back at the completion of the Amidah, It is best to do the Amidah again as a “nedava

3.

If one says 90 times “baruch ata Hashem hamelech hakadosh” or “baruch ata Hashem hamelech hamishpat” and during the Amidah one is in doubt whether one said “hamelech hakadosh” - one needs to start the Amidah over again..

4.

On Shabbat Teshuvah and when Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat, the shatz says “hamelech hakadosh” in the “beracha me’ein sheva” Friday night.

In the end of the beracha, one only mentions Shabbat but not Rosh Hashanah nor Yom Kippur.

5.

Some have the tradition to pray on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur while bent over.

The Geonim instituted to say the following in the Amida during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah:

In the blessing of Avot: “zachreinu”.

In the blessing of Gevurot: “mi chamocha”.

In the blessing of Hodoah: “uchesov”.

In the blessing of Sim Shalom: “uvasefer”.

If one forgets to say them and remembers before completing the beracha – one says it at the place one remembered.

If one remembers after mentioning Hashem’s name in the end of the beracha, then one should not say it there nor should he start the beracha over again.

7.

The word is pronounced: “lechayim”, not “lochayim” which means no life.

8.

One does not say “lechayim tovim” only “lechayim” until one reaches “uchesov lechayim”, and then one says “lechayim tovim”.

9.

On Rosh Hashanah, one says “vatiten lanu es yom hazikoron hazeh” and one does not need to mention Rosh Chodesh by saying: “ve’es yom rosh chodesh hazeh”.

On weekdays, one says in the prayers and Kiddush: “yom truah, mikrak kodesh”. On Shabbat, “zichron teruah”.

10.

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we do not say: “moadim lesimcha, chagin uzemanim lessason”.

We also do not say: “vehasieinu es birkas moadecha”.

In Musaf, we do not say “ve’ein anu yecholim lalos veleiraos lefanacha” but “ve’ein anu yecholin lasos chovoseinu”.

11.

In the end of the beracha in the prayers, haftorah, and Kiddush, we say “udevarcha emes etc., not udevarcha malkeinu emes”.

(Chabad tradition is to say: “udevarcha malkeinu emes”.)

12.

The word is pronounced “shehashaltan”.

13.

The word is pronounced “veharishah”.

14.

We say “uvechein tzadikim” not “veaz tzadikim

15.

We do not say “beahava mikra kodesh”, rather “yom truah mikra kodesh”.

Chabad custome is to say on Shabbat “zichron truah beahava mikra kodesh” (not as in Shulchan Aruch)

16.

In all kadeishim from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur, we say “Leila uleila”.

Chapter 583

Foods that are customarily eaten on Rosh Hashanah

1.

On Rosh Hashanah people should eat foods whose name means “to increase”, in their language.

It is customary to eat a sweet apple dipped in honey at the beginning of the meal (after “hamotzie”) on the first night.

We say: “yehi ratzon shetechadeish aleinu shana tova umesuka”. (see subsection 3)

You make the blessing “haeitz” on the apple but not “shehakol” on the honey.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

The apple we eat on the first night of Rosh Hashanah is in the beginning of the meal. The new fruit we eat on the second night is before washing our hands for the meal.

Shulchan Menachem page 85 (the following is not a quote but rather the content according to my understanding)

The original custom of Chabad was to eat the apple dipped in honey on the first night of Rosh Hashanah before the meal. Then the Rebbe instructed, based on what he saw the Previous Rebbe actually doing, to eat it in the beginning of the meal.

2.

Some have the custom to eat fish. Our custom is to eat the head of a fish. (see subsection 5)

We do not cook it in vinegar.

3.

All kinds of food that one needs to make a beracha when eating them in the meal, e.g. apples or pomegranates, the “yehi Ratzon” should be said after one begins to eat, since it is prohibited to interrupt between the beracha and the eating.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

The “yehi ratzon” on the apple is recited after the beracha before the eating.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

As far as the blessing of the “borei pri haeitz” which we make on the night of Rosh Hashanah on the sweet apple dipped in honey, there is a disagreement if that exempts the “borei pri haeitz” of the dessert. Therefore it was the custom of the Rebbe Rayatz n.e.to have in mind not to fulfill with his blessing on the apple the dessert and he would make a second “haeitz” on the desert.

Shulchan Menachem page 85 (Following is not a quote but rather the content according to my understanding)

There were changes in the custom of the previous Rebbe as far as having in mind the blessing of haeitz on the apple. The final custom is the one brought down from Sefer Haminhagim above.

4.

It is customary to dip the piece of “hamotzie” into honey.

We eat pomegranates.

It is customary to eat fatty meat, to drink honey and all kinds of sweets.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

We eat a pomegranate and the head of a ram, but we only say “yehii ratzon” on the apple.

5.

One should eat a head of a ram, if there is no ram’s head, then one should eat the head of a sheep. If there is no sheep’s head, then eat any head. That is to say: “Let us be a head and not a tail”.

6.

Some are careful not to eat nuts.

7.

It is customary to go to a river that has living fish and recite the verse “yashuv yerachameinu etc., vesashlich etc.”

It is best for the “tashlich” to be outside the city.

One should go on the first day of Rosh Hashanah after Minchah before sunset and say “mi keil kamocha etc.”

8.

It is customary not to sleep during the daytime on Rosh Hashanah, in order for your good fortune not sleep.

One who is wasting time is like sleeping.

The Haftorah is from the beginning of the book of Shmuel until “veyareim keren meshicho”. (Shmuel 1 1 -2, 10)

There are places in which the custom is to call up the “tokeah” as one of the five going up to the Torah. In some places, the custom is also to call up the one who leads musaf.

The same is also on Yom Kippur.

Chapter 585

Order of the Tekios meyushav

Sefer Haminhagim

The Rebbe Rayatz would instruct the tokeah to study on the mornings of Rosh Hashanah the Mymer: “lehavin inyan tekias shofar” (that is printed in the siddur)

1.

The tokeah needs to be standing when blowing. He should not lean on anything (so that if you moved the item he was leaning on he would fall).

If one transgressed and blew even while fully sitting, yatza.

2.

The ones listening to the tekios, do not need to stand during tekios.

3.

It is customary to blow from the Bimah, from the place you read the Torah.

It is fitting to give the privilege of blowing to a righteous and proper person.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

The one leading the verses before the tekios also chants the 3 verses that follow the tekios. Then the community continues with “ashrei”.

4.

Before blowing, one makes the beracha while standing, “asher hanu bemitzvosov vetzivanu lishmoa kol shofar”.

If one transgressed or mistakenly said: “litkoa bashofar” or “al tekiat shofar” – yatza.

5.

After this beracha, recite “shehechiyanu”.

When blowing for others, (e.g. the tokeah already heard tekios) the one listening should make the blessings. If the listeners cannot make the berachot, then the blower makes the berochos for them.

6.

After saying these two blessing, one blows “tashrat” 3 times, “tashat” 3 times and “tarat” 3 times.

One who is not sure if he heard the sounding of the Shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah needs to hear the Shofar again. However, the blessings for the Shofar are not said when one is not sure.

On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, if one is not sure, one does not need to blow again.

When possible, it is best to blow on the right side of one’s mouth.

7.

It is best that the mouth of the Shofar should be towards up and not to the sides.

8.

If one begins to blow but cannot finish all the 30 sounds, someone else should take his place.

If the second one cannot complete this, then another should take his place, and so on. They all need not make a beracha, since they were already exempt with the blessing made by the first one.

This is even in a situation where the first one could not even blow the first sound, yet his blessing was not in vein, since he intended with his blessing to fulfill the obligations of all the listeners. They do not need to make any further berachot.

If however a person who has not heard the blessing is coming to blow, then he must make the blessing, since he had not fulfilled his obligation with the first one’s blessing.

9.

The above applies only in a situation where the one blowing has not yet fulfilled his obligation, as he had not yet heard all the sounds.

If however he did fulfill his obligation, for he heard all the sounds in another shul, he does not need to make the beracha before blowing.

10.

It is customary that the one leading shacharis reads the order of the tekios before the tokeah, word for word, so that the tokeah should not make mistakes in his blowing.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

The one who Is “makrie” the tekios, points with his finger in the siddur but does not verbalize it in speech.

11.

It is prohibited to take pay for blowing the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah, even when hired before Yom Tov. One, who does accept payment, will never see blessing in that pay.

Chapter 586

Laws regarding the Shofar of Rosh Hashanah.

1.

It is a Mitzvah for the Shofar to have a bend in it.

All Shofros that are bent are kosher except those of a cow or ox because they are called horns not Shofros.

Most horns of the wild animals are one-bone horns and are not called Shofar. They are not fit even bediaved.

2.

It is best to use the Shofar of a ram.

If one does not have a bent Shofar or bediaved, one fulfills the obligation with a straight Shofar.

3.

A shofar from a non-kosher animal is not fit, even bediaved.

4.

One who steals a Shofar and blows it – yatza.

However, no blessings should be said.

5.

It is permissible to take someone’s Shofar without asking and to fulfill with it the mitzvah of sounding the Shofar. He can also make the blessing on this Shofar.

6.

One who uses a Shofar that a Jew used for idle worship, such as bowing to it, lo yatza.

7.

A Shofar with a hole in it, even if there is not a tefach (the smallest shiur for a Shofar) from the hole to the place where you put your mouth, it is Kosher.

If you stuff the hole with something not from the type of the Shofar it is, it is pasul. (so I understood from subsection 8)

8.

Even if a minority of the Shofar’s length is split and the majority of the Shofar is intact, it is pasul. (If you glued or heated up the shofar to connect the split, it is kosher.)

If there is no other Shofar, then it is kosher with the minority split.

9.

If the Shofar is split on its width, that is the circumference of the Shofar.

If the split is on the minority of the circumference and the majority of the circumference is intact, it is kosher. (It is kosher even if there is a voice change from the original sound before it was split).

If the split covers the majority of the circumference, then if from the split to the place where one puts their mouth on the Shofar there is less than a tefach then it is pasul. If there is a tefach then it is kosher.

10.

If one pastes broken pieces of Shofar and makes one Shofar out of the pieces, it is pasul.

11.

If you add to the length of the Shofar, so now the sound goes through the addition, it is pasul.

(It is pasul regardless if the addition is from the type of the Shofar or not, and it is pasul whether the addition is on the wide side or the narrow side of the Shofar).

12.

If you turn over the Shofar, lo yatza.

Whether you turned it inside out, (as with a shirt) or if you widened the narrow side and narrowed the wide side of the Shofar, (by putting the Shofar in boiling water), it is pasul.

13

If the Shofar was long and then it was shortened, if there remains the shiur of a Shofar, it is kosher.

What is the shiur for a Shofar?

It is a tefach, so that when you hold the Shofar in your hand, (4 average fingers), the Shofar can be seen from both sides.

14.

If you scrape the Shofar from the inside or the outside and all that remains is a skeleton, it is kosher.

15.

If you remove the zachrus (male, inside filler of horn) from the horn and you make a Shofar out of it by puncturing a hole, it is pasul.

If you do not remove the zachrus from the horn and you puncture a hole, it is kosher.

One is even permitted to make a Shofar like that to begin with, even if the zachrus interrupts between the sound and the natural hollow.

16.

There should be nothing in between the mouth of the tokeah and the Shofar. Therefore, if the Shofar was covered with gold, (to beautify the Shofar) on the spot where the mouth goes, it is pasul.

If the covering is at a distance from the tokeah’s mouth, it is kosher.

However if there is a change (even minimal) to the sound of the Shofar due to the covering, it is pasul.

17.

If the covering adds to the length of the Shofar, by placing some gold on the thickness of the Shofar, (even if the addition is to the wide side of the Shofar) it is pasul. (Even if the sound does not change at all).

18.

It is not proper to draw shapes on the Shofar to beautify it.

However, you it is permisable to engrave shapes into the Shofar itself to beautify it.

19.

If you place the Shofar a bit of a distance from your mouth and you blow into it and make a sound, you have not fulfilled your obligation.

20.

If you place a Shofar into another Shofar and you only hear the sound of the inner Shofar, you fulfilled your obligation, as long as the sound did not change due to being inside the outer Shofar.

If the sound changes, or if you hear the sound of both of them together, lo yatza.

21.

Anything, which disqualifies the Shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, is also pasul on the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

22.

One may not desecrate Yom Tov (even if the prohibition is Rabbinic) in order to fulfill the Mitzvah of Shofar on Rosh Hashanah.

23.

Examples:

If the Shofar was on a top of a tree, or on the other side of the river and one has no other Shofar, one may not go up the tree, and one may not swim in the river to bring the Shofar.

If a heap of stones fell on the Shofar, it is prohibited to move the stones in order to get to the Shofar. It goes without saying that we cannot bring a Shofar from outside the techum.

24.

The above prohibition applies when doing it through a Jew, but through a non-Jew one is permitted to do anything whose prohibition is only Rabbinic, such as climbing a tree, or bringing it from outside of the techum.

However, one cannot tell a non-Jew to do a complete melacha (a Torah prohibition) for him.

If the non-Jew does a complete melacha on his own, for instance, he made a Shofar on Yom Tov; it is permissible to blow with it, even if it was done for the Jew.

25.

You can only use the Shofar, if the non-Jew used his own horn. If he makes a Shofar on Yom Tov from a horn belonging to a Jew, its use is prohibited.

If however there is no other Shofar, then you may use this Shofar.

26.

If a non-Jew brings a Shofar for a Jew on Yom Tov from outside the techum. (Even if he brought it from outside of 12 mil), even the Jew, for whom it was brought, may use it. You must be careful, not to move it outside of 4 amos.

27.

One is allowed to place a Shofar on Yom Tov in water or wine in order to polish the Shofar.

One is not allowed to place a Shofar in mey-raglayim even during the weekday.

Chapter 587

Laws when blowing inside a pit

1.

One must listen to the sound of the Shofar without a mix of another voice. If you hear, the sound mixed with another voice, lo yatza.

Therefore if one blows in a place where the sound mixes with an echo before it goes out, then only if the listeners who are standing outside are sure that what they heard was the sound of the Shofar – yatzeu. If they are not sure, lo yatzeu. It is best not to rely on your expertise and to listen to the tekios a second time from someone who is not blowing in a pit. However, no beracha should be said for the second tekios, unless they know for sure that what they heared was an echo.

2.

The tokeah himself and those standing with him in the pit - yatzeu.

3.

If one started to blow in the pit, left the pit and completed the tekiah - yatza. However if when leaving the pit one’s ears left the pit while the Shofar was still in the pit, lo yatza.

Those who were with him in the pit when he began to blow and they remained there when the blower left they fulfilled their obligation with the tekios.

4.

If one hears a partial tekiah from the Shofar and part of an echo, or if one hears only a partial obligatory sound, e.g., a Tekiah begun before daylight and was completed after daylight, or one who asks someone who was just blowing, (not intending to fulfill the other’s obligation) to have him in mind to fulfill their obligation, all of these these cases - lo yatzu, (even though the part which was heard meets the shiur of a tekiah)

5.

People who are somewhat of a distance from outside the Shul and heard the sounds from the tokeah, if they are not certain that what they heard was the sound of the Shofar, they must hear the Shofar again, because it is possible that what they heard was the sound of an echo. If however it appears certain to them that what they heard was the sound of the Shofar, they need not be stringent upon themselves to hear the sounds again.

Chapter 588

Time for sounding the Shofar

1.

The time for sounding the Shofar is during the daytime, starting with dawn until the stars come out. The Chachomim required us to wait until the sun begins to shine, neitz hachamah, before blowing. If one transgressed and blew after dawn, not waiting for neitz hachamah - yatza and does not need to blown again.

2.

If one hears a “tekiah” partially before dawn and partially after dawn, lo yatza.

3.

If one hears the 9 sounds, (the Torah obligation is only 9 sounds), over 9 hours: the tekiah sound at the hour no. 1, the teruah sound at hour no. 2, and the tekiah sound at hour no. 3 - yatza.

If 9 people make the 9 sounds at the same time, lo yatza.

4.

When Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, we do not sound the Shofar.

5.

The laws of moving the Shofar on a Rosh Hashanah Shabbat are the same as moving it on any other Shabbat. One may move it only for letzorach mekomo or letzorach gufo, e.g, one may use the Shofar to lean a plate on it.

However, when Rosh Hashanah falls on a weekday, although one may move the Shofar even not letzorach gufo umekomo, you may not use the Shofar to lean a plate on it, for it is huktzah lemitzvoso.

6.

A minor who blows on this Shabbat, the Beit Din is required to stop him, even if he has not yet reached the age of education.

A person who is exempt from the mitzvah of Shofar cannot blow for others to fulfill their obligation.

The following are exempt:

Women, servants, “cheresh”, and shotah.

A minor, even after reaching the age of education, (and is obligated medrabanan), cannot fulfill the obligation for the adult whose obligation is from the Torah.

7.

A “cheresh” who can hear but not speak, is considered fully healthy and is obligated in tekias Shofar. He may therefore fulfill others’ obligations. One of the listeners should make the beracha and the cheresh blows.

A “cheresh” who can speak but not hear cannot be motzie others. Since he cannot hear, he is not obligated, for the mitzvah is not the sounding, but the listening.

8.

A blind person is obligated in tekias Shofar. We go by the Halacha, that a blind person is obligated in all Torah commands.

9.

A “tumtum” and an “andereigunis”, because they may be males, are obligated misafek. However, they cannot fulfill the obligations of other males, who are definitely obligated.

An “andereigunis” can fulfill the obligation of another “andereigunis” but cannot fulfill the obligation of a “tumtum”. Even a “tumtum” cannot fulfill the obligation of another “tumtum”.

Chapter 589

Who are the ones fit to sound the Shofar?

1.

One who is half slave and half free cannot blow for himself and needs another free person to blow for him.

2.

Although women are exempt, they are allowed to blow for themselves. Also a man who has already fulfilled his obligation is allowed to blow for them. You are also permitted to take the Shofar into the public domain in order to blow for women.

The women’s custom is to make the blessing for all time- bound mitzvos, which they are essentially exempt. Therefore they should make the blessing themselves. A man may not make a blessing for them if he had already fulfilled the mitzvah of tekias Shofar. That would be a beracha levatalah.

3.

One who pledged not to benefit from his friend may still fulfill his obligation by hearing the Shofar from that friend. However, he may not tell him specifically to blow for him.

4.

If one specifically prohibited his friend’s tekios, he may not listen even to a tekiah of mitzvah.

5.

One who is learning how to blow the Shofar does not fulfill the Mitzvah. The same is true for one who listens to someone learning how to blow, lo yatza.

6.

One who is blowing for music and not intending for the mitzvah, lo yatza.

7.

If the one blowing intends to fulfill the obligation of the listener but the listener does not intend to fulfill his obligation, or the listener intends to fulfill his obligation but the blower does not intend to fulfill the listener’s obligation, (he was blowing for himself), in both cases, the listener does not fulfill his obligation. In order for the listener to fulfill his obligation, the listener and the blower must intend for the listener to fulfill his obligation.

If one blows and has in mind that anyone who wishes can fulfill their obligation, if the listener intends to fulfill his obligation, although the blower is not specifically intending for this listener, the listener fulfilled his obligation.

Therefore, if a person walking in the street or sitting at home hears the Shofar from the shatz, and he intends to fulfill his obligtion – yatza, since the shatz has in mind to fulfill the community’s obligation with his blowing the shofar.

8.

One who hears the Shofar blown for the mitzvah but later on he is not sure if he had it in mind to fulfill his obligation; he needs to hear the Shofar again, because of the doubt.

However, a person walking who stops to listen to the tekios and then is not sure if he had it in mind to fulfill his obligation, he does not need to hear it blown again.

9.

One who comes to Shul to listen to tekios from the shatz to fulfill his obligation with the rest of the community, but at the time he heard the Shofar he did not have any specific intention in mind, he just listened - yatza.

Chapter 590

The proper order for the sounding of the Shofar

1.

How many sounds must one hear on Rosh Hashanah?

9. Tarat, tarat, tarat. (tara t= tekiah, teruah, tekiah)

2.

In order to cover all opinions, the Chachomim instituted to blow 3 times tashrat (=tekiah, shevarim, teruah, tekiah), then 3 times tashat (tekiah, shevarim, tekiah), and then 3 times tarat (tekiah, teruah tekiah)

3.

One can save themselves the sounding of one tekiah by conditioning at the last tekiah of the order of tashrat, that if the order of tashrat is the main mitzvah, then the tekiah should be the last tekiah of tashrat. If tashat is the main mitzvah then the tekiah should be the first tekiah of the order of tashat.

One may make the same condition for the last tekiah of the order of tashat.

One tekiah only works if one specifically conditions so, otherwise one tekiah cannot be used for two orders.

4.

The minimum length of a tekiah should equal the minimal length of the teruah.

Therefore, in the order of tashrat the tekiah should equal 3 average shevarim plus 3 short sobs.

In the order of tashat, the tekiah should equal 3 average shevarim.

In the order of tarat, the tekiah should equal only 3 short sobs.

One may stretch the tekiah for as long as he wishes. Also the teruah blower can sound as many trumitin as he wishes.

However, the custom for snhevarim is, to blow only 3 shevarim.

5.

In Shulchan Aruch, he brings down at length opinion number 1. Due to the complicated details, I only brought down the conclusion in subsection 7.

5.

In Shulchan Aruch, he brings down at length opinion no. 2. Due to the complicated details, I only brought down the conclusion in subsection 7.

6.

The Halacha is as follows:

The tekios of tashrat should be minimally the length of 18 trumitin.

The tekios of tashat and tarat should be 9 trumitin minimally.

Each shever should be as long as 3 trumitin minimally but not as long as 9 trumitin.

Each teruah needs to have 9 trumitin minimally.

8.

All the truos as well as the 3 shevarim need to be done in one breath. If you have not done those in one breath - lo yatza.

There are two opinions about whether the 3 shevarim and the teruah, in the order of tashrat, need to be done in one breath or not.

Even according to the opinion that it iss done in two breaths, there must not be an additional breath. Therefore, the tokeah should not wait for the makrie to read the word: “teruah”.

Even according to opinion that it is done in one breath, a small interruption between the shevarim and teruah needs to be made, so there are two voices.

9.

The Halacha in the above is, if there is no set custom, we should institute that during tekios meyushev it is in done in one breath but in tekios meumed it is done in two breaths.

One who blows tarat or tashat in one breath, even if he interrupted a bit in between each, he should blow again all of the 3 sounds.

10.

One cannot blow a prolonged tekiah to be used in place of two tekios, e.g., for the end tekiah of one set and for the beginning tekiah of the next set. That tekiah would only count for the end tekiah.

11.

It is best for one not to even use it for the end tekiah and go back and blow again the first tekiah of the set and finish in order.

12.

One is not allowed to speak, beginning with the tekios meyushev until after the tekios meumed. Nevertheless if the tokeah transgressed and spoke, even if he interrupted and talked for many hours, even in between the tekiah and teruah or the teruah and tekiah, or in between one set and the other set, or between one order and the other order, he does not need to repeat and blow again.

Even if one interrupted with other sounds, in between the sounds that are within the same set, that still would not be a problem.

13.

The same is true to the one listening to the tekios. Even if he interrupts by talking a lot - yatza, provided he did not hear the sound of a Shofar blown for a mitzvah, that wasn’t fitting at this spot.

14.

A person also need not hear all the sounds from one person. If one hears a tekiah from one and from the other a teruah and from another a tekiah, and so on for all the sounds – yatza.

However if one hears tarat from three people blowing at the same time, (one a tekiah, one a teruah, one a tekiah) – lo yatza.

If several people are blowing at the same time, even if some are blowing a trumpet, but each one blows tarat – yatzeu.

15.

If one who is in the order of tashrat, and after blowing 2 shevarim before he can blow the third shever, he mistakenly starts to make the teruah, he needs to blow again the 3 shevarim, then the teruah, and finish according to the order.

He need not go back and blow the first tekiah, which was blown before the mistake was made.

16.

This applies only to the order of tashrat, in the order of tashat, if one should start to do the teruah sound, one needs to go back and start with the first tekiah of this set.

Even in the order of tashrat, only if one did not interrupt with a breath after concluding the 2 shevarim before starting the mistaken teruah - yatza. If however a breath was made, then one needs to start with blowing the first tekiah of this set.

17.

If after blowing three shevarim, he interrupts with a breath and then blows more shevarim, or, in the order of tashrat, or tarat, after completing the teruah, he interrupts with a breath and continues to make the teruah, he would need to blow again starting with the first tekiah of this set and continue in order.

18.

In all the cases that one needs to go back and start with the first tekiah of that set, if one does not realize the mistake until after the last tekiah of that set, that tekiah counts for the first tekiah and one continues from there.

If one does not realize the mistake until one is standing in another set or even in another order, e.g., the mistake was in the order of tashrat and one only realized it when doing tashat or tarat – one should finish the entire order that one is in and then blow one set of tashrat.

19.

In all cases above in which one is required to blow the first tekiah of the set in which one made the mistake, it makes no difference whether these are tekios meumed or tekios meyushev - one needs to go back and start with the tekiah.

However if a mistake is made in the tekios that are after the prayers, that does not matter.

20.

If one blew in the wide side of the Shofar, lo yatza.

21.

After the sounding of the Shofar, the shatz begins: “ashrei hoam yodei teruah”, etc., some continue until “tarum karneinu”. Then the shatz says, “ashrei yoshevey, etc.” and you put the Seferi Torah back to their place.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56

The one leading the verses before the tekios also sings the 3 verses that follow the tekios. After that, the community continues with “ashrei”.

Chapter 591

The order of Musaf when praying by yourself

1.

On Shabbos and Yom Tov, one prays seven blessings, but on Rosh Hashanah, the Chachomim instituted praying 9 blessings on each of the two days.

In the blessing of the sanctity of the day, we include the verses of malchiyos, to accept upon ourselves the heavenly yoke. After this, we say the blessing of zichronos in which we say the verses of remembrance so that our remembrance should go up before Hashem for the good. This happens through the Shofar, therefore the blessing of Shofros follows, in which we include the verses of Shofros.

2.

On Rosh Hashanah, even people who know the prayers can fulfil their obligation with the prayer of the shatz, provided they are in the shul and listen to the prayer of the shatz from the beginning to the end.

Those who cannot make it to shul because of being a “ones”, e.g., people who live in places where there is no minyan, or being elderly or sick, the shatz exempts them even though they do not hear the prayers of the shatz.

3.

Nowadays, since the shatz interrupts the prayer with piyutim, a person cannot fulfil his obligation with the prayers of the shatz.

4.

Even in places where piyutim are not said, it has become the standard custom for everyone to pray the Musaf 9 blessings. First, the congregation recites the Amidah belachash and the shatz prays along with the community in order to organize his prayers. He continues with the repetition of the Amidah.

5.

One needs to mention the verses of the musaf sacrifices in the Musaf prayer so that their mention should take the place of their offerings.

If one says: “na’aseh venakriv, lefanacho kemo shekosavto aleinu besorosecho” – yatza. He need not say the actual verses of the musafin.

We do not say the verses of the Rosh Chodesh Musaf in the musaf of Rosh Hashanah. It is sufficient that we say: “milvad olas hachodesh etc.” In order to make mention of the chatosgoat brought on Rosh Chodesh, we say: “usheney seirim lechapeir.” We also say “es musefey yom hazikoron” in a plural to include the Musaf of Rosh Chodesh, which is called “zikoron”.

Also on the second day of Rosh Hashanah which is not Rosh Chodesh, we still say: “es musefey, etc.,” and Usheney seirim lechapeir,” so that people will not come to treat the second day cheaply.

6.

Why do we not mention Rosh Chodesh explicitly on Rosh Hashanah?

If we mentioned Rosh Chodesh on the first day we would mention it also on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. People might say: “the second day of Rosh Chodesh is the main”, as it is with all other Rosh Chodesh, and will count the holidays from the Second day Rosh Hashanah.

Another reason is to confuse the Satan that he not know that this day is Rosh Chodesh Tishrei and he will not come to criticize.

7.

One should say 10 verses for malchiyos, 10 verses for zichronos, and 10 for Shofros, corresponding to the asara mamoros with which the world was created.

First we do 3 verses are from the Torah, then 3 verses from the kesuvim, then 3 verses from the nevi’im, and the final verse is from the Torah. If one concluded the final verse with a verse from the navie (4 verses from the navie) - yatza.

8.

The accepted customs amongst all of Israel is to say all 10 pesukin. This should not be changed.

9.

In the verses of malchiyos, zicronos, and shofros one does not say verses that have punishment for Israel but we do say verses that have punishment for non-Jews.

10.

We do not use a verse that speaks in lashon yachid, such as: “zochrah li elokei letovah” or “zachreini Hashem bertzon amecha”.

11.

The verse “Shema Yisroel Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad” is counted as one of the 10 verses for malchiyos. It is used to conclude the order of malchiyos, so that we conclude with a verse of the Torah.

12.

Teruah” is the same as “shofros”, e.g. “yom truah yehiyeh lachem” counts for the count of Shofros. Likewise “tekiah” counts for “shofros”, e.g.,”usekatem bachatzotzeros etc.” We conclude with this verse so that we end with a verse from the Torah.

Some are careful to say: “Vakeidas Yitzchak lezaro shel Yaakov hayom tizkor” for if one says “lezaro tizkor” that would include Esau.

Other say that we should not change the old language and we should say: “Veakeiydas yitzchal lezaro hayom tizkor”. (This is the way it is in the Chabad Machzor.)

13.

A person praying alone should not do the Musaf on Rosh Hashanah until after 3 hours of the day.

14.

For Musaf all year as well at Schacharis on Rosh Hashanah there is no restriction.

In the summer months one needs to be careful not to daven the weekday Schacharis at the first hour of the day, since there probably is no minyan anywhere davening at that time, nowadays.

In the winter, one should not delay after two hours of the day, since all minyanim have already finished at that time and an individual should be careful not to be the only one davening in the third hour.

An individual should not blow the Shofar of Mitzvah until after three hours of the day.v

15.

One should say: “Vein leforeish eilum shemecha” not “Ve’ein pirush, etc.”

Chapter 592

The repetition of the Amidah and the order of the Tekios

1.

When you pray Musaf b’tzibur, the Chachomim instituted to blow tarat for malchiyos, tarat for zicronos and tarat for shofros.

The custom is to blow twice, once during the quiet prayer and once during the repetition by the shatz.

2.

These tekios are called: “tekios meumed”, because the listeners need to be standing while hearing these tekios, as opposed to the “tekios meyushev”, where only the tokeah needs to be standing.

3.

It is fitting to blow: tashrat, tashat, tarat for malchiyos, the same for zichronos and the same for shofros, in order to remove any doubt in the “teruah” of the Torah.

4.

Some have the custom to blow for malchyos: one time tashrat; for zichronos: one time tashat and for Shofros one time tarat.

5.

Others have the custom to blow: tashrat, tashat, tarat for malchiyos and the same for zichronos and the same for Shofros. This is the best custom.

6.

Every time after we blow we say, “hayom haras olam, etc.” and “areshes sefaseinu etc.”

Even when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat we say “hayom haras olam, etc.” but we do not say “areshes sefaseinu etc.”

7.

One who prays by himself without a minyan does not interrupt to blow the shofar in the blessings of the amida. Even if one has someone to blow for him, he does not interrupt to listen to the sounds of the shofar, because thetekios were only instituted when praying with a minyan.

It is best to hear the sounds that the Torah obligates one to listen to, that is, tashrat 3 times, tashat 3 times and tarat 3 times, before the musaf prayer.

One needs to be careful not to interrupt with talk between the tekios meumed and the tekios meyushev. This applies not only to the tokeah who made the blessing on the shofar, but also to the community who did not make their own beracha, they too shall not speak from the beginning of the tekios meyushev until after the tekios meumed.

If one transgressed and did speak, whether the tokeah or the listeners, they need not make a beracha for the tekios meumed.

8.

While the shofar is sounding, both by the tekios meyushev and tekios meumed, it is prohibited to spit, since one needs to hear the entire sound from the beginning to the end, even if it a long note.

Therefore, children that have not reached the age of education, should not be brought to shul for tekios, so they do not interfere with the listeners.

The children should go to the women’s section, since they are exempt from shofar.

9.

The custom is that for the tekios meyushev the tokeah blows from the bimah, out of respect for the community. But since the tekios meumud are in middle of the prayer, we do not trouble the blower to go up to the bimah - he blows from his place.

10.

The tekios meumed should not be blown by the shatz who leads musaf so he should not get confused and thus not be able to continue his prayers without becoming confused.

If the shatz is certain that he can go back to his prayers without confusion or if he is using a prayer book, then he may blow.

It is fitting for the one blowing the tekios meyushev to also blow the tekios meumed, for “one who starts a mitzvah we tell him to finish it”, unless he is a shatz who leads musaf and he might get confused.

11.

Nowadays the custom is to give the tekios meumed to someone else, so the first tokeah never merited the rights to the tekios meumed. It is therefore permissible to give it to someone else in all places.

Chapter 593

Whether the berachos and the Tekios prevent one another

1.

The 3 blessings that we recite on Rosh Hashanah, malchiyos, zichronos and shofros, prevent one another. If he does not know all of them, he should say none, not even the one he knows.

2.

The order of the berachot is also precise and if one proceeds to say zichronos or shofros before malchiyos - lo yatza.

3.

Likewise, the tekios hold up one another, if one only knows how to make a “tekiah” but does not know how to make a “teruah”, one should not blow at all. There is no mitzvah here unless one is able to do tarat 3 times.

However, one who knows how to blow, what we call “teruah” and does not know how to blow shevarim, he should blow tarat 3 times. The same is true if he knows how to sound the shevarim but does not know how to sound what we call “teruah”. He should blow tashat 3 times, for perhaps that what he knows is the “teruah” that the Torah meant and thus it turns out he fulfilled the mitzvah.

4.

The tekios meumed do not hold back the blessings, so that if there is no one who knows how to sound the shofar the shatz should still recite the 9 blessings.

The same is true that the blessings do not hold back the tekios. If they do not know how to say these berachot, they still need to sound the 3 orders of the shofar.

If the 9 blessings were said with a minyan but the shofar was not sounded until after the prayer – yatzu.

Chapter 594

An individual cannot fulfill his obligation by listening to his friend’s prayer

1.

Although one can fulfill his obligation of reciting the 9 blessings of musaf by listening to the shatz (even if you know how to daven on your own), yet if there are not 9 answering amen after the blessings, a person cannot fulfill their obligation with the prayer of another.

This is so even if you do not know how to daven on your own and even in a situation in which no amen is necessary after the blessings.

For example, one who did not pray musaf quietly yet, so he needs to daven for himself. If he wants to daven out loud so he can fulfill the obligation of one who does not know how to daven, and there is no beracha levatolo even without amen being said after the blessings.

Yet, if there are not 9 to answer amen, this prayer is not called the prayer of a tzibur, and you cannot be motzie anyone with your pryaer. Only when listening to the prayer of a tzibur can one be yotze their obligation.

For tekios, however, even one who knows how to blow himself, one fulfills his obligation just by listening to someone else blowing, even if there is no tzibur listening with him.

Chapter 595

One who does not know how to blow the shofarnor how to daven

1.

If one who is not knowledgeable in the order of musaf and also does not know how to blow, or he has no Shofar. He has two cities before him, in one they know how to blow but don’t know musaf, and in the other they know musaf but they have no shofar or they don’t know how to blow the shofar, where should he go?

He should go to the place where they sound the shofar.

Even in a situation in which he is not sure whether they blow the shofar in that city, and in the other city he is certain that they do do musaf, he shall go to the city where he might listen to the shofar. For the sound of the shofar is a Torah command, and the prayer of musaf was ordained by the Rabbis. A doubtful Torah observance comes before a certain rabbinic performance.

2.

If one is able to go to a place where he can daven and he will still have time to hear the tekios in another place, since all day it is fit for sounding the shofar, he should go to daven first and then go to listen to the shofar, so he will perform both mitzvos.

He should not go first to the place to hear the shofar and then to the place to daven, since the time for musaf is shorter than the time for the sounding of the shofar. (When possible, musaf must not be delayed beyond 7 hours of the day).

Chapter 596

Rest of the laws for the Shofar

1.

We do not follow the custom to blow after the prayers a “truah gedolah” without a tekiah to confuse the Satan.

The custom is to repeat and blow 30 sounds.

The custom is to blow on Rosh Hashanah 100 sounds. We blow tashrat tashat and tarat in the kadish tiskabel after the Amida, 30 sounds by tekios meyushev, and 60 sounds by tekios meumed.

2.

After all of the above sounds of the shofar have been blown, one should not blow the shofar any further in vein, for sounding the shofar is Rabbinically prohibited on Yom Tov.

Even one who will be bowing the shofar on the second day Rosh Hashanah, is still prohibited to train on the first day. It goes without saying that one should not take the shofar into the public domain to sound the shofar that he has no need for today.

However, it is permissible to say to a minor to blow in order to train, whether the minor has reached the age of education or not. A minor is allowed to blow the entire day, even after having heard the sounds in the Shul.

The law for Tzidkascha, vetzidkascha, tzidkascha on Rosh Hashanah

1.

We do not say “tzidkascha” by Minchah Rosh Hashanah that falls on a Shabbat.

Chapter 599

Laws for the Second night Rosh Hashanah that falls on Saturday night

1.

When the second night Rosh Hashanah falls on Saturday night, in the “amida” we say “vatodieinu” before “vatiten lanu”, as we do in other “yomim tovim” when they fall on Saturday night.

The order of kiddush Is 1. Yayin. 2. Kiddush. 3. Neir. 4. Havdala. 5. Zeman. This is the same order as we do in other “yomim tovim” when they fall on Saturday night.

2.

Rosh Hashanah is different from the other festivals. On other festivals, an egg laid by a chicken on the first day of Yom Tov can be used on the second day Yom Tov.

3.

The two days of Rosh Hashanah are considered one long day.

An egg laid on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, or an item which was detached or captured on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, is prohibited on the second day, just as it is prohibited (because of muktzeh and nolad) on the first day.

6.

When making Kiddush it is best to put on a new garment that one needs to make “shehechiyanu”.

Alternatively, one takes a new fruit and places it in front of him.

When making the blessing of “shehechiyanu” during Kiddush, one should have in mind the new garment or the fruit.

If you do not have a new garment or a new fruit, you still should make the blessing of shecheyanu.

7.

On the second day Rosh Hashanah for the blowing of the shofar, it is best that the one who blows should put on a new garment. It should be on him during the blessing of “shehechiyanu”.

When the first day of Rosh Hashanah comes on Shabbos, and the shofar was not blown, one does not need a new garment at the time of tekios of the second day.

Order of second day Rosh Hashanah

1.

On the second day Rosh Hashanah, we pray the same shacharis and mincha as in the first day.

The Torah portion is “vehoelokim nisa es Avraham”(Breishis 22:1-24).

The Maftir Torah portion, is the same as the first day.

The Haftorah reads “ko amar … haben yakir li etc.”, (Yirmiyah 31: 1 - 19)

א

2.

On motzoei Rosh Hashanah, we make Havdalah over a cup of wine as we do on Saturday night. However, we do not do the blessing on besamim, nor on the eish. It is also not done at the end of all other yomim tovim.

1.

On the day after Rosh Hashanah, we fast. It is a public fast day. (Tzom Gedalyah)

2.

On all the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we increase in our prayer and beseeching to Hashem.

It is customary to recite “avinu malkeinu” in the evening and morning, (by Minchah and Schacharis).

We do not say “avinu malkeinu” on Shabbos and on the eve of Shabbos after Minchah.

3.

Every day during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah we say 3 times viduy (slichos) before dawn. On erev Yom Kippur, we say it only once.

(Chabad custom is not to say selichot during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, also not on erev Yom Kippur.)

4.

If there is a circumcision in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, no tachnun and no “vehu rachum” are said. We do however say: “avinu malkeinu”, “keil erech apayim”, and “lamentatzeiach”.

(According to Chabad custom we do not say “avinu malkeinu”, “keil erech apayim”, nor ”lamenatzeiach”)

5.

A “Cheirem” is not placed in-between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

We also do not administer an oath in beit din during these days.

However, to adjudicate between a man and his fellow, it is certainly a great Mitzvah to remove the theft from the one holding it illegaly.

If the case requires an oath amongst them, the judgment is put off until after Yom Kippur.

Customs for Rosh Hashanah from Sefer Haminhagim

The Rebbe Rashab would accept upon himself a new stringency before every Rosh Hashanah.

During the two days of Rosh Hashanah, starting from one hour before the Mincha prayer on the eve of Rosh Hashanah until Maariv on Motzaei Rosh Hashanah, each one of you (the students, but this applies to everyone) should diligently recite Tehillim day and night. For in these two days, we must refrain from weekday conversation to the utmost, sleep little, and engage greatly in prayer and beseeching Hashem from the depth of the heart. Every free moment, recite Tehillim.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

I wish to also make you aware that even those who smoke all year and do so even on Yom Tov, on Rosh Hashanah we hold back from this activity. It is fitting that students of Torah should be careful with this and also influence their acquaintances.

During the two days of Rosh Hashanah, from one hour before Mincha on Erev Rosh Hashanah until Maariv at the end of Rosh Hashanah, each one of you (the students, and of course this applies to everyone) should be diligent in reciting Tehillim day and night. For on these two days, one must be careful to avoid mundane speech to the utmost, to minimize sleep, and to increase in prayer and supplication from the depths of the heart. In every free moment, one should say Tehillim.

Order of Customs

Before Maariv, we recite Tehillim.

The one who leads the services for Mincha and Maariv does not wrap himself in a tallis.

We do not wear a Kitel, only on Yom Kippur.

Blessing for Lighting Rosh Hashanah Candles

The blessing for lighting the Rosh Hashanah candles is "lehadlik neir shel yom hazikaron" (and not "lehadlik neir shel yom tov"), as this is also the wording in the blessings of Kiddush and Haftorah recited on Rosh Hashanah, which conclude with the words "veyom hazikaron".

There are approaches that do not differentiate between Rosh Hashanah and other Yomim Tovim, and say on Rosh Hashanah as well "lehadlik neir shel yom tov", since there is no difference in their content. However, even according to these opinions, on Yom Kippur one says "lehadlik neir shel yom hakippurim", because it is different in content from other Yomim Tovim, as there is no eating or drinking, etc.

And the reason that in the prayers and Kiddush we say on Rosh Hashanah "mekadesh Yisroel veyom hazikaron", and not "vehazmanim" as on other Yomim Tovim, is because the ending of the blessing must be similar to its content. On Yom Tov, the ending is "umoadai kodshecha", so we conclude "vehazmanim", but on Rosh Hashanah we do not say before the ending "umoadai kodshecha", but rather "vedevarecha malkeinu emes", so the ending is "yom hazikaron".

One can connect the approaches regarding the wording of the candle-lighting blessing on Rosh Hashanah to the reason for lighting candles, which is for the honor of Shabbos and Yom Tov. In that case, there should be a difference in the wording between Rosh Hashanah and other Yomim Tovim (since the honor is by mentioning the Yom Tov specifically). However, if the reason is for shalom bayis, then it is the same for all, and there is no reason to differentiate in the wording.

Chapter 582

Order of Prayers for the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah and Rosh Hashanah

1. During the ten days, from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, one says "hamelech hakadosh" and "hamelech hamishpat". If one made a mistake and said "hakeil hakadosh", or if one is unsure if he said "hamelech hakadosh", one must go back to the beginning of the Amidah.

2. If one remembers, before the amount of time it takes to greet one's teacher has passed, after finishing the blessing, one says "hamelech hakadosh" and does not need to return to the beginning. The same applies to "hamelech hamishpat": if one remembers, before the amount of time it takes to greet one's teacher has passed, after finishing the blessing, one says "hamelech hamishpat". However, if one said "melech ohev tzedaka umishpat" and remembers the mistake after that amount of time, one does not need to start over. However, after stepping back at the completion of the Amidah, it is best to repeat the Amidah as a voluntary prayer (nedava).

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

2. If one remembers, after waiting the amount of time it takes to say "Melech ohev tzedakah umishpat," one does not need to return to the beginning. However, if one already took a step back, it is good to pray again as a voluntary prayer, and there is no need to add anything new in it.

3. If one said ninety times, "baruch ata Hashem hamelech hakadosh" or "baruch ata Hashem hamelech hamishpat," and afterwards is in doubt during the Amidah whether one said "hamelech hakadosh," nevertheless, one must return to the beginning, according to all opinions.

4. On Shabbos Teshuvah, and likewise if Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, the shatz says "hamelech hakadosh" in the beracha me’ein sheva on Friday night. He concludes mentioning only Shabbos, and does not mention Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur.

5. Some have the custom to pray on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur while bent over.

6. The Geonim instituted to say the following during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah: In the blessing of Avos, "zachreinu"; in Gevuros, "mi chamocha"; in Hoda’ah, "uchesov"; in Sim Shalom, "uvasefer." If one forgot to say them and remembered before finishing the beracha in which one forgot, one says it at the place one remembered. If one remembered after mentioning Hashem’s name at the end of the beracha, one should not say it there, nor return to the beginning of the beracha.

According to the nusach of the Arizal, in all prayers one says "mi chamocha av harachaman," except in Musaf (on Shabbos, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur) and Ne’ilah (Yom Kippur) and Mincha of Shabbos, when one says "mi chamocha av harachamim."

7. One should pronounce "lechayim" with a sheva under the lamed, and not with a patach, so that it does not sound like "lachayim," which means "no life."

8. One does not say "lechayim tovim," only "lechayim," until reaching "uchesov lechayim," at which point one says "lechayim tovim."

9. On Rosh Hashanah, one says "vatiten lanu es yom hazikaron hazeh," and there is no need to mention Rosh Chodesh by saying "ve’es yom rosh chodesh hazeh." If it falls on a weekday, in the prayers and Kiddush one says "yom teruah, mikra kodesh." If it falls on Shabbos, one says "zichron teruah."

10. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, one does not say "moadim lesimcha, chagin uzemanim lesason." Likewise, one does not say "vehasieinu es birkas moadecha." In Musaf, one does not say "ve’ein anu yecholim lalos veleiraos lefanacha," but rather "ve’ein anu yecholim la’asos chovoseinu."

11. At the end of the beracha in the prayers, haftorah, and Kiddush, one says "udevarcha emes," etc., and not "udevarcha malkeinu emes," but "udevarcha emes." (The Chabad tradition is to say: "udevarcha malkeinu emes.")

Foods that are customarily eaten on Rosh Hashanah

1. On Rosh Hashanah, a person should be accustomed to eat foods whose name, in their language, means “to increase”; every community eats according to their own language. It is customary to eat a sweet apple dipped in honey, after hamotzie at the beginning of the meal on the first night, and to say: “May it be Your will that You renew for us a good and sweet year.” (See subsection 3.) One recites the blessing “haeitz” on the apple, but not “shehakol” on the honey. (See subsection 3.)

2. Some have the custom to eat fish. Our custom is to eat the head of a fish. (See subsection 5.) We do not cook it in vinegar.

Some eat fish, and our custom is to eat the head of a fish.

We do not cook with vinegar.

3. All types of foods that require a beracha when eaten during the meal, such as apples or dates, the request (“yehi ratzon”) should be said after beginning to eat, because it is forbidden to interrupt between the beracha and the eating.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56: The “yehi ratzon” on the apple is recited after the beracha and before eating.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56: Regarding the beracha of “borei pri ha’eitz” that is recited on the sweet apple dipped in honey on the night of Rosh Hashanah—there is a dispute whether this beracha exempts the “borei pri ha’eitz” for the dessert. Therefore, the Rebbe Rayatz would intend not to fulfill with his beracha on the apple the dessert as well, and he would recite a second “ha’eitz” on the dessert.

Shulchan Menachem page 85: There were changes in the custom of the previous Rebbe regarding having in mind the beracha of “ha’eitz” on the apple. The final custom is as brought in Sefer Haminhagim above.

4. It is customary to dip the piece of “hamotzie” in honey.

We eat pomegranates, and it is customary to eat fatty meat, to drink honey, and all kinds of sweets.

Sefer Haminhagim page 56: We eat a pomegranate and the head of a ram, but we only say “yehi ratzon” on the apple.

5. One should eat the head of a ram; if there is no ram’s head, eat the head of a sheep. If there is no sheep’s head, eat another head, to say: “Let us be a head and not a tail.”

6. Some are careful not to eat nuts.

7. It is customary to go to a river that has live fish and to say there the verse “yashuv yerachameinu etc., vesashlich etc.” It is best that it be outside the city.

One should go on the first day of Rosh Hashanah after Minchah, before sunset, and say the verse “mi Keil kamocha etc.”

8. It is customary not to sleep during the day on Rosh Hashanah, so that one’s good fortune does not sleep. One who sits idle is considered as if sleeping.

Order of Torah Reading on Rosh Hashanah

1. We do not recite Hallel on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

2. It is customary to recite “Avinu Malkeinu” in its order.

On Rosh Hashanah, we skip “Avinu Malkeinu chatanu lefanacha.”

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

We do not say verses that mention sin. (See section 3.)

During the sounding of the shofar, when the Satan is confused, it is proper to confess quietly between the blasts, at the time when the congregation says "Yehi ratzon milfanecha," etc.

3. The Chabad custom is to skip on Rosh Hashanah: "Avinu Malkeinu selach," "mechei," "mechok," "kasveinu besefer selicha umechila."

4. One says "roah gezar" in one breath.

5. We do not say "Avinu Malkeinu" on Shabbos. Even at Minchah on the eve of Shabbos, we do not say it.

6. On Rosh Hashanah, we prolong the piyutim and prayers at least until midday.

We say the 13 attributes of mercy when taking out the Torah, even when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos. The same is true for Yom Kippur.

7. We take out two sifrei Torah. In the first, we read five aliyos, from "V'Hashem pokad es Sarah" (Genesis 21:20) until the section of the Akeidah (Genesis 22:1). If it is Shabbos, we read seven aliyos. The maftir reads in the second Torah in the section of Pinchas, "Uvachodesh hashevi'i" (Numbers 29:1-6). The Haftorah is from the beginning of the book of Shmuel until "veyareim keren meshicho" (Shmuel I 1-2, 10).

8. There are places where the custom is to call up the tokeah as one of the five who are called to the Torah. In some places, the custom is also to call up the one who leads Musaf. The same is also on Yom Kippur.

9. The law, when there is a baby to circumcise on Rosh Hashanah.

Order of the Tekios Meyushav

The Rebbe Rayatz would instruct the tokeah to study on the mornings of Rosh Hashanah the maamar "Lehavin inyan tekias shofar" (that is printed in the siddur).

1. The tokeah needs to be standing when blowing. Therefore, he should not lean on anything in such a way that if the item he was leaning on were removed, he would fall. If one transgressed and blew even while fully sitting, he has fulfilled his obligation.

2. The ones listening to the tekios do not need to stand during the tekios.

3. It is customary to blow from the bimah, from the place where the Torah is read. It is fitting to give the privilege of blowing to a righteous and proper person.

The one leading the verses before the tekios also chants the three verses that follow the tekios. Then the entire congregation continues with "Ashrei."

4. Before blowing, one makes the beracha while standing: "Asher kidshanu bemitzvosav vetzivanu lishmoa kol shofar." He should not say "bekol shofar." If one transgressed or mistakenly said "litkoa bashofar" or "al tekiat shofar," he has fulfilled his obligation.

5. After this beracha, recite "Shehechiyanu."

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

5. When blowing for others (for example, if the one blowing has already heard the sounds), the listener should recite the blessings. If the listeners are unable to recite the blessings, then the blower recites the blessings for them.

After this blessing, one recites “Shehechiyanu.”

Whether one is blowing for himself, or one who has already fulfilled his obligation and is blowing to enable others to fulfill theirs, both recite these two blessings.

This applies when the listener does not know how to recite the blessings. But if he knows how, he should recite them himself, and should not hear them from someone who has already fulfilled his obligation.

6. After reciting these two blessings, one blows “tashrat” three times, “tashat” three times, and “tarat” three times.

If someone is unsure whether he heard the sound of the Shofar:

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, which is a Torah obligation, he must blow again, but does not recite the blessing, since in cases of doubt regarding blessings, we are lenient.

If it is the second day, which is only a Rabbinic obligation, he does not need to blow again, since in cases of doubt regarding Rabbinic matters, we are lenient.

It is best to blow on the right side of one’s mouth, if possible.

7. It is best that the mouth of the Shofar should be facing upward, and not turned to the sides.

8. If one began to blow but could not complete all thirty sounds, another should take his place.

If the second also cannot complete them, another should take his place, and so on. None of them need to recite the blessing, since they were all already exempted by the blessing of the first.

Even if the first was unable to blow even a single sound, nevertheless, his blessing was not in vain, since his intention with his blessing was to fulfill the obligation for all the listeners. Therefore, the subsequent blowers and all the congregation who heard his blessing do not need to recite another blessing.

However, if someone who did not hear the blessing comes to blow, he must recite the blessing before blowing, since he did not fulfill his obligation with the first one’s blessing.

9. The above applies only when the one blowing has not yet fulfilled his obligation, as he has not yet heard all the sounds. But if he has already fulfilled his obligation, having heard all the sounds in another shul, he does not need to recite the blessing before blowing.

10. It is customary that the one leading Shacharis reads the order of the tekios before the blower, word for word, so that the blower does not make a mistake in his blowing.

According to Sefer Haminhagim, page 56: The one who is “makrie” the tekios points with his finger in the siddur, but does not verbalize it aloud.

11. It is forbidden to take payment for blowing the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah, even if one was hired before Yom Tov. If one does accept payment, he will never see blessing from that payment.

Laws regarding the Shofar of Rosh Hashanah

1. It is a mitzvah for the Shofar to be bent.

All bent Shofros are kosher except those of a cow or ox, because they are called “horns” and not “Shofros.”

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. The mitzvah of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah is that it should be bent. All bent Shofars are valid, except for those from a cow or an ox, because these are not called Shofar but rather "horn." The same applies to the horns of most wild animals, which are a single bone and are not called Shofar. They are invalid even bediaved.

2. It is best to blow with a ram's Shofar. If one does not have a bent Shofar, or bediaved, one fulfills the obligation even with a straight one.

3. A Shofar from a non-kosher animal is to be invalidated, even bediaved.

4. One who steals a Shofar and blows it has fulfilled the obligation. However, since the mitzvah came to him through theft, he should not recite a blessing over it.

5. It is permitted to take another person's Shofar without his knowledge in order to blow the mitzvah blast, and one may recite the blessing over it.

6. One who blows with a Shofar that was used for idol worship by a Jew, such as bowing to the Shofar, has not fulfilled the obligation.

7. A Shofar with a hole in it, even if there does not remain from the end of the crack to the place where the mouth is placed the minimum measure of a Shofar, is kosher. But if the hole is stuffed with something not of the same type as the Shofar, it is invalid.

8. If a minority of the Shofar's length is split and the majority remains whole, and it was not glued or joined with heat, it is invalid. If it was tightly bound with thread or a band, it is kosher. In a pressing situation, when no other Shofar is available, it is kosher.

9. If the Shofar is split along its width, that is, around its circumference, and the split is in a minority of the circumference and the majority remains whole at that spot, it is kosher, even if its sound has changed from what it was before the split. But if the majority of the circumference is not whole, and from the split to the place where the mouth is placed there is not the minimum measure of a Shofar, it is invalid. But if there is the minimum measure from the split to the mouthpiece, it is kosher.

10. If one glues together broken pieces of Shofar and makes from them a whole Shofar, it is invalid.

11. If one adds anything to the length of a whole Shofar, so that the sound comes out through the addition—whether the addition is of the same type as the Shofar or not, whether it is added to the narrow side or the wide side—it is invalid.

12. If one turns the Shofar inside out and blows it, he has not fulfilled the obligation. Whether he turned it inside out as one turns a shirt, making the inside the outside and the outside the inside, or left it as it was but widened the narrow end and narrowed the wide end with boiling water, and blew from either end, he has not fulfilled the obligation.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

13. If a Shofar was long and then it was shortened, if there remains the required size of a Shofar, it is kosher.

What is the required size of a Shofar?

It is a tefach, so that when the person blowing holds the Shofar in his hand, meaning with four average fingers, the Shofar can be seen from both sides.

14. If you scrape the Shofar, whether from the inside or the outside, until it becomes very thin like a shell, it is kosher.

15. If you remove the zachrus (the inner core of the horn) from the horn and make a Shofar from it, such as by puncturing it, it is invalid. But if you do not remove the zachrus from the horn and only puncture a hole, it is kosher. One is even permitted to make a Shofar like this from the outset. Even if the zachrus separates between the sound and the naturally hollow part, which is called the Shofar, it does not matter, for something of the same kind does not create a separation, and it is as if the zachrus were not there at all.

16. There should be nothing separating between the mouth of the person blowing and the Shofar. Therefore, if the Shofar is covered with gold at the place where the mouth is placed, even if the covering is along the length of the Shofar, if it is right next to the narrow end where the mouth is placed, it is invalid. But if the covering is distant from the mouth of the person blowing, it is kosher. However, if it is known that the sound is changed because of the covering, even if the change is slight, it is invalid.

17. But if the covering adds to the length of the Shofar, even on its wide side, if any gold is placed on the thickness of the Shofar in a way that the Shofar becomes longer, it is invalid, even if the sound is not changed at all.

18. Those who draw designs on the Shofar to beautify it are not acting properly. However, it is permitted to engrave designs into the Shofar itself to beautify it.

19. If you hold the Shofar a little distance from your mouth and blow into it and make a sound, you have not fulfilled your obligation.

20. If you place a Shofar inside another Shofar: If you hear only the sound of the inner Shofar, for example, if on the narrow side the inner Shofar protrudes more than the outer one, and you place the inner one in your mouth and blow, and on the wide side the outer one does not protrude more than the inner one, or they are equal, so that there is no mixture of sound from the outer one, but only from the inner one, then you have fulfilled your obligation, as there is only the sound of one Shofar. This is provided that the sound is not changed because it is inside the outer Shofar. But if the sound is changed, or if on the wide side the outer Shofar protrudes more than the inner one, or on the narrow side they are equal, so that it is impossible not to hear the sound of both, you have not fulfilled your obligation, for the Torah requires the sound of one Shofar, not two.

21. Anything that disqualifies the Shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah also disqualifies it on the second day, even if the disqualification is only Rabbinic.

22. One may not desecrate Yom Tov for the sake of the Mitzvah of Shofar on Rosh Hashanah. Even for something whose prohibition is only Rabbinic, one may not desecrate Yom Tov for it.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. If the Shofar is at the top of a tree, or on the other side of a river, and one has no other Shofar except for that one, one may not climb the tree, and one may not swim across the water to bring it. If a heap of stones fell on the Shofar, it is forbidden to move the stones in order to take it. One may not go outside the techum to hear the sound of the Shofar. It goes without saying that one may not bring it from outside the techum.

2. The above applies when done by a Jew, but through a non-Jew, it is permitted to do anything whose prohibition is only Rabbinic, such as climbing a tree or bringing it from outside the techum, and anything similar. However, it is forbidden to tell a non-Jew to do a complete melacha (a Torah prohibition) for him. Nevertheless, if the non-Jew did a complete melacha on his own, for example, he made a Shofar on Yom Tov, it is permitted to blow with it, even though it was done for a Jew.

3. This applies when the non-Jew made the Shofar from his own horn. But if a non-Jew made a Shofar on Yom Tov from a horn belonging to a Jew, it is forbidden for the Jew to move it in order to blow with it. However, if there is no other Shofar except for this one, it is permitted to blow with it.

4. If a non-Jew brought a Shofar on Yom Tov from outside the techum for a Jew, even if he brought it from beyond twelve mil, it is permitted to blow with it, even for the Jew for whom it was brought. Nevertheless, care must be taken not to move it more than four amos.

5. One may put water or wine into the Shofar on Yom Tov in order to polish it. This is not considered as fixing a utensil on Yom Tov. However, it is forbidden to put it in mey-raglayim even on a weekday, out of respect.

Laws when blowing inside a pit

1. Hearing the sound of the Shofar must be without any mixture of another sound. If one heard the sound mixed with another sound, he has not fulfilled his obligation. Therefore, if one blows in a place where the sound becomes mixed with an echo before it goes out, then if those standing outside are certain that they heard the sound of the Shofar, they have fulfilled their obligation. If not, they have not fulfilled it. It is best to be stringent, that even if one is certain that he heard the sound of the Shofar, he should not rely on his expertise, and should hear the tekios again from someone not blowing in a pit. However, one should not recite a beracha for the second tekios, unless it is certain that what was heard was an echo.

2. However, the one blowing, and those standing with him in the pit, have fulfilled their obligation. There is no need to hear it again.

3. If one began to blow in the pit, left the pit, and completed the tekiah, he has fulfilled his obligation. However, if when leaving the pit, his ears left the pit while the Shofar was still in the pit, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

3. If one began to blow the Shofar in a pit and then went up out of the pit and finished the blast that was begun in the pit, he has fulfilled his obligation.

If, when he came up from the pit, he put his ears outside the pit before he took the Shofar out, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

Those who were standing with him in the pit at the time he began to blow there, even if they did not leave the pit with him, nevertheless, they fulfill their obligation with the blasts.

4. If one hears part of a Shofar blast and part of an echo, or hears part of a blast that is not obligatory—meaning, before daylight—and part of it after daylight, or if one says to someone who is blowing (without intent to fulfill anyone's obligation), in the middle of the blast, "Have in mind to fulfill my obligation," and he blew and extended the blast for the required length, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

5. If the blower is in the shul and there are people standing outside, a bit distant from the shul, if it is not clear to them that they heard the sound of the Shofar, they must hear the blasts again, for it is possible they heard an echo. But if it seems clear to them that they heard the sound of the Shofar, they do not need to be stringent upon themselves and hear it again.

Time for Sounding the Shofar

1. The time for sounding the Shofar is during the day, from dawn until the stars come out. However, the Chachomim required waiting until the sun rises. Nevertheless, if one transgressed and blew after dawn, before sunrise, he has fulfilled his obligation and does not need to blow again.

2. If one heard part of a blast before dawn and part of it after dawn, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

3. If one heard nine blasts (the Torah obligation is nine blasts) over nine hours of the day—a tekiah in one hour, a teruah in another hour, and a tekiah in another hour—he has fulfilled his obligation.

If he heard nine blasts from nine people who blew at the same time, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

4. If Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos, the Shofar is not blown.

5. The laws of moving the Shofar on this Shabbos are the same as moving it on any other Shabbos: one may move it only for the sake of its place or for its use, such as to support a plate with it, and the like.

But if Rosh Hashanah falls on a weekday, although it is permitted to move the Shofar even not for its use or its place, since it is blown on that day and its status is like a utensil whose primary use is permitted, nevertheless, it is forbidden to use it or benefit from it on that day, such as to support a plate with it, and the like, for it has been set aside for its mitzvah.

6. If a minor blows on this Shabbos, the Beis Din is required to stop him, even if he has not yet reached the age of education.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

6. If a minor blows the Shofar on this Shabbos, Beis Din is required to stop him, even if he has not yet reached the age of education.

If the one blowing is exempt from this mitzvah, he cannot fulfill the obligation for others with his blowing.

The following are exempt: women, servants, a cheresh (deaf-mute), a shotah (one who is mentally incompetent), and a minor—even if he has reached the age of education—cannot fulfill the obligation for adults, whose obligation is from the Torah.

7. A cheresh who can hear but not speak is considered fully healthy and is obligated in blowing the Shofar. Therefore, he can fulfill the obligation for others. One of the listeners should recite the blessing, and he blows. But one who can speak but not hear cannot fulfill the obligation for others. Since he cannot hear, he is not obligated, for the mitzvah is not in the blowing, but in the hearing.

8. A blind person is obligated in blowing the Shofar. If he was established as the one who blows every year and was removed because of concern for the opinion that a blind person is exempt from all the mitzvos stated in the Torah, if there is no one as skilled in blowing as he is, he should be reinstated to his position.

However, initially, he should not be removed, even if there is someone as skilled as he is, for the main Halacha for us is that a blind person is obligated in all the mitzvos stated in the Torah.

9. A tumtum and an andereigunis, since they may be males, are obligated out of doubt. Therefore, they cannot fulfill the obligation for others who are definitely obligated. However, an andereigunis can fulfill the obligation for another andereigunis like himself, since his obligation is also out of doubt. But he cannot fulfill the obligation for a tumtum. Even a tumtum cannot fulfill the obligation for another tumtum.

Who are the ones fit to sound the Shofar?

1. One who is half slave and half free requires a free person to blow for him to fulfill his obligation. He does not fulfill his obligation with his own blowing.

2. Although women are exempt, if they wish to blow for themselves, they are permitted to do so. Likewise, another person who has already fulfilled his obligation is permitted to blow for them. It is also permitted to carry the Shofar into the public domain in order to blow for women.

The custom among women is to recite a blessing on all positive, time-bound mitzvos. Therefore, here too, women should recite the blessing themselves. However, men should not recite the blessing for them if they have already fulfilled their own obligation and are blowing only for the women, for this would be a blessing in vain.

3. One who has vowed not to benefit from his friend—if he said, "Konam that I benefit from so-and-so"—his friend is permitted to blow a mitzvah blast for him, provided his friend does so on his own initiative. But he should not tell his friend to blow for him.

4. This applies when he prohibited his friend's benefit to himself. But if he prohibited his friend's blowing to himself, saying, "Konam the blowing of so-and-so upon me," it is forbidden for him to listen, even to a mitzvah blast from his friend.

The proper order for the sounding of the Shofar

1. How many sounds must one hear on Rosh Hashanah? Nine: tarat, tarat, tarat (that is, tekiah, teruah, tekiah).

2. And the Chachomim instituted, in order to fulfill all doubts, to blow: three times tashrat (tekiah, shevarim, teruah, tekiah), then three times tashat (tekiah, shevarim, tekiah), and then three times tarat (tekiah, teruah, tekiah).

3. One can save themselves the sounding of one tekiah by making a condition at the last tekiah of the order of tashrat, that if the order of tashrat is the main mitzvah, then the tekiah should be the last tekiah of tashrat, and if tashat is the main mitzvah, then the tekiah should be the first tekiah of the order of tashat. One may make the same condition for the last tekiah of the order of tashat.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

3. If one made a condition regarding the last tekiah of the three orders of tashrat, that if the order of tashrat is the main mitzvah, this tekiah will count as the last tekiah of tashrat; and if the orders of tashat are the main mitzvah, and with them he fulfills his obligation, this tekiah will count as the first tekiah of tashat—then he does not need to blow again before the first tashat, for in any case, he fulfills his obligation with this tekiah. The same law applies if he made a condition regarding the last tekiah of tashat, that it should count as the first tekiah of tarat.

But if he did not make such a condition, one tekiah does not count for two orders—neither for tashrat and tashat, nor for tashat and tarat.

4. The tekiah in tashrat must be extended to the length of the teruah in the order of tashrat, that is, the length of three average shevarim, which are like three average groans, and like three short sobs, for all together, this is the teruah of the order of tashrat.

In the order of tashat, one only needs to extend the tekios to the length of three average shevarim, which is the length of the teruah in the order of tashat.

In the tekios of the order of tarat, one only needs to extend to the length of three short sobs, which is the length of the teruah in the order of tarat.

If one wishes to extend any tekiah greatly, he is permitted to extend as much as he wants. The only requirement for the tekios is not to be less than the minimum length.

Similarly, in the teruah, one may extend the trumitin as much as he wishes.

The custom regarding shevarim is not to blow more than three shevarim.

5. In Shulchan Aruch, he brings at length the first opinion here, but I have only brought the conclusion of the halacha, which is stated below in subsection 7.

6. In Shulchan Aruch, he brings at length the second opinion here, but I have only brought the conclusion of the halacha, which is stated below in subsection 7.

7. Regarding the halacha: one should extend the tekios of tashrat to at least the length of eighteen trumitin. For the tekios of tashat and tarat, to at least the length of nine trumitin.

For each shever, one should extend it slightly, to the length of three trumitin, but not up to nine trumitin, even in the order of tashrat. Each teruah must be made with at least nine trumitin.

8. The teruos, as well as the three shevarim, must be done in one breath. If they were not done in one breath, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

First opinion: The three shevarim and the teruah in tashrat—the blower must take a breath between them. However, he should not pause longer than it takes to take a single breath, and he should not wait to blow the teruah until the reader calls out the word "teruah" before him. Rather, he should blow the teruah immediately after the shevarim, right after taking a single breath.

Second opinion: There should be no interruption; if he did them in two breaths, he has not fulfilled his obligation, but must do them in one breath. Nevertheless, he should pause slightly between them, so that they are divided into two distinct sounds.

9. The halacha regarding the above is: if there is no established custom, we should institute that during tekios meyushev it is done in one breath, but during tekios meumad it is done in two breaths.

If one blew tarat or tashat in one breath, even if he paused slightly between each sound, he should blow all three sounds again.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. In a place where there is no established custom, one should institute that the tekiyos meyushev be blown in a single breath. However, for the tekiyos meumed, they should be blown with two breaths.

2. If the one blowing the shofar blows a teres-teres-teres or shevarim-shevarim-shevarim in a single breath, even if he paused slightly between them, he must go back and blow all three sounds again.

10. One cannot blow a prolonged tekiah to serve as two tekiyos, for example, as the final tekiah of one set and the initial tekiah of the next set. That tekiah only counts as the final tekiah of the first set.

11. It is best not to even use it for the final tekiah, but rather to go back and blow again the first tekiah of the set and then finish the rest in order.

12. It is forbidden to speak from the beginning of the tekiyos meyushev until after the tekiyos meumed. Nevertheless, if the one blowing the shofar transgressed and spoke, even if he interrupted and spoke for many hours, even between the tekiah and the teruah, or between the teruah and the tekiah, or between one set and another, or between one order and another, he does not need to go back and blow again. Even if he interrupted between the sounds within a single set with other sounds, for example, after blowing or after making a teruah, he became involved with other tekiyos or teruos and interrupted with them between the teruah of that set and the tekiyos before or after it, it does not matter.

This is because the Torah only insisted that there not be an interruption between them with a shofar sound that is not a simple sound, which the blower intended as a mitzvah. In that case, there is not a simple sound before or after, but rather a shofar sound that is not simple before or after. But if he did not intend it as a mitzvah, then it is not considered a shofar sound that is not simple before or after, since his sound is considered nothing, and it is similar to the sound of an animal, since he did not intend it as a mitzvah.

13. The same applies to the listener. If he heard the tekiyos with interruptions, meaning he interrupted in between with much talking, he has fulfilled his obligation, provided that in the middle of the set he did not hear a shofar sound that was not fitting in that place, meaning that between the teruah of the set and the simple sounds before and after it, he did not hear a shofar sound that was not a simple sound for the sake of the mitzvah.

14. One does not need to hear all the tekiyos from one person. Even if he heard them from several people, a tekiah from one, a teruah from another, and a tekiah from another, and so on for all the sounds, he has fulfilled his obligation. But if he heard a tekiah, teruah, and tekiah from three people blowing all at once—one a tekiah, one a teruah, and one a tekiah—he has not fulfilled his obligation. However, if each of the three blew a tekiah, teruah, tekiah, even if some blew with trumpets and some with a shofar, they have fulfilled their obligation.

15. If one is in the order of tashrat, and after blowing two shevarim, before he can blow the third shever, he mistakenly begins to make the teruah, he must blow again the three shevarim, then the teruah, and finish according to the order. He does not need to go back and blow the first tekiah that was blown before the mistake.

The order of Musaf when praying by yourself

1. The one blowing the shofar who is in the order of tashrat, and after blowing two shevarim, before completing the third shever, makes a mistake and begins to blow a teruah—whether he finishes the mistaken teruah or remembers in the middle—should go back and blow three shevarim, then a teruah, and continue from there in order.

However, he does not need to go back and blow the first tekiah of this set that he already blew before the mistake.

16. This applies only in the order of tashrat. But if one is in the order of tashat and begins to blow a teruah, he must go back and blow also the first tekiah of this set.

Even in the order of tashrat, the rule that one does not need to go back and blow the first tekiah applies only if there was no interruption with a breath between finishing the second shever and starting the mistaken teruah. But if there was an interruption with a breath between them, he must go back and blow also the first tekiah of this set.

For since there was an interruption with a breath between the shevarim and the teruah, they are not considered as one tekiah, and the teruah does not join at all with the shevarim.

17. Similarly, if after blowing three shevarim—whether in the order of tashrat or tashat—he interrupts with a breath and then blows more shevarim, or if after finishing the teruah, he interrupts with a breath and then blows another teruah, he must go back and blow also the first tekiah of this set, and continue from there in order.

18. In every case where it was explained that one must go back and blow also the first tekiah of the set, if he does not realize the mistake until after blowing the last tekiah of the set, that last tekiah counts in place of the first tekiah, and he continues from there in order.

If he does not realize until he is already in another set or even in another order—for example, he made a mistake in the order of tashrat and only realizes when he is in tashat or tarat—he should finish the entire order he is in, and then blow one set of tashrat.

19. In every case above where it was explained that if one makes a mistake, he must go back and blow the first tekiah of the set in which he made the mistake, there is no difference between the standing tekios and the sitting tekios; in each, one must go back, as explained above.

But if a mistake is made in the tekios after the prayers, it does not matter.

20. If one blows from the wide side of the shofar, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

21. After the sounding of the shofar, the shatz begins, “Ashrei ha’am yodei teruah,” etc. Some have the custom to continue until “tarum karneinu.” After that, the shatz begins, “Ashrei yoshvei,” etc., and then the Sifrei Torah are returned to their place.

The one who recites the verses before the tekios also sings after them the three verses: “Ashrei ha’am,” “B’shimcha yagilun,” “Ki tiferes,” and afterwards the entire congregation together says “Ashrei yoshvei veisecha.”

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. On Shabbos and Yom Tov, one prays seven blessings. But on Rosh Hashanah, the Chachomim instituted that in the Musaf prayer of both days, one prays nine blessings. That is, in the blessing of the sanctity of the day, one includes the verses of malchiyos, in order to accept upon ourselves the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven. After this, one says the blessing of zichronos, and in it, recites the verses of remembrance, so that our remembrance should rise before Him for good. And through what is this accomplished? Through the shofar. Therefore, afterwards, one says the blessing of shofros, and recites the verses of shofros.

2. In the Musaf of Rosh Hashanah, even someone who is proficient in the prayers fulfills his obligation with the prayer of the shatz. This is provided that he is in the shul with the shatz and listens to the prayer from beginning to end. But someone who is prevented and cannot come to shul, such as people in the fields, or an elderly or sick person, the shatz exempts them even though they did not hear the prayer from him.

3. Nowadays, since the shatz interrupts the prayer with piyutim, a person does not fulfill his obligation with the prayer of the shatz.

4. And even in places where piyutim are not said in the middle of the prayer, nevertheless, it is better that each person prays for himself. Therefore, the custom of all Israel is that everyone first prays the Musaf of nine blessings quietly. The shatz also prays with them, in order to arrange his prayer, and then continues with the repetition of the Amidah.

5. One must mention the verses of the Musaf sacrifices in the Musaf prayer, so that their mention should be in place of their offering. If one said, "We will perform and offer before You, as You have written for us in Your Torah," he has fulfilled his obligation and does not need to say the actual verses of the musaf sacrifices. We do not say the verses of the Rosh Chodesh Musaf in the Musaf of Rosh Hashanah. It is sufficient that we say, "besides the burnt-offering of the month," etc. And in order to mention also the goat, which is a sin-offering, we say, "and two goats for atonement." We also say, "the musaf offerings of the day of remembrance," in the plural, in order to include also the Musaf of Rosh Chodesh, which is called "remembrance." And even on the second day, which is not Rosh Chodesh, nevertheless, we say, "the musaf offerings," etc., and "and two goats for atonement," so that people will not treat the second day lightly, since they know that the second day is the second of the month and not Rosh Chodesh.

6. Why do we not mention Rosh Chodesh explicitly on Rosh Hashanah? If we were to mention Rosh Chodesh on the first day, we would also mention it on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. People might then say, "the second day of Rosh Chodesh is the main one," as is the case with all other Rosh Chodesh, and they would count the holidays from the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

6. Why do we not explicitly mention Rosh Chodesh on Rosh Hashanah? So that people will not say, "The second day of Rosh Chodesh is the main day, as with other Rosh Chodesh days, and count the festivals from it." For if Rosh Chodesh were mentioned also on the second day, people would say that Rosh Chodesh is two days. And another reason is to confuse the Satan, so that he will not know that today is Rosh Chodesh Tishrei and will not come to criticize.

7. Ideally, one should say ten verses for malchiyos, ten verses for zichronos, and ten verses for shofros, corresponding to the ten utterances with which the world was created. The first three verses are from the Torah, the next three from Kesuvim, the next three from Nevi’im, and the final verse from the Torah. If one concluded with a verse from Nevi’im, saying four verses from Nevi’im, he has fulfilled his obligation.

8. All of Israel has already accepted upon themselves the obligation to say all ten verses, and this should not be changed.

9. In the verses of malchiyos, zichronos, and shofros, one does not say verses that contain punishment for Israel, but one may say verses that contain punishment for non-Jews.

10. One does not say a verse of zichronos that is in the singular form, such as, "Zochrah li Elokai letovah" or "Zachreini Hashem bertzon amecha."

11. "Shema Yisroel Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad" is counted among the ten verses for malchiyos, for the word "Echad" expresses kingship, meaning that He is unique and singular, there is none like Him, and His kingship rules over all. Therefore, we conclude malchiyos with it, so as to end with a verse from the Torah.

12. "Teruah" is considered the same as shofros, for example, "Yom teruah yihiyeh lachem" counts for the count of shofros. Likewise, "tekiah" is considered as shofros, for example, "Usetaktem bachatzotzros" etc. Even though it says "chatzotzros" (trumpets), it does not matter; since it contains the term "tekiah," it counts for shofros. Therefore, we conclude shofros with it, so as to end with a verse from the Torah.

Some are careful to say, "V'akeidas Yitzchak l'zar'o shel Yaakov hayom tizkor," for if one says "l'zar'o tizkor," Esau would also be included. Others say that one should not change the old wording: "V'akeidas Yitzchak l'zar'o hayom tizkor." (This is also the wording in the Chabad Machzor.)

13. A person praying alone should not pray Musaf on Rosh Hashanah until after three hours of the day.

14. For Musaf throughout the year, as well as for Shacharis on Rosh Hashanah, there is no such restriction. In the summer months, one must be careful not to pray the weekday Shacharis in the first hour of the day, since nowadays there is likely no minyan praying at that time. In the winter, one should not delay past two hours of the day, since all minyanim have already finished by then, and an individual should be careful not to be the only one praying in the third hour. An individual should not blow the mitzvah shofar until after three hours of the day.

But the Musaf prayers of the entire year, as well as Shacharis—even on Rosh Hashanah—since they are only the praise of the Holy One, blessed be He, and recounting the acts of the offerings, even if one prays alone, his deeds are not scrutinized.

Similarly, the weekday Shacharis prayer, even though one requests his needs in it and there is reason to be concerned that his deeds might be scrutinized, nevertheless, since it is assumed that there is at least one congregation praying at the same time as he is, for its time is in the morning, his prayer will be accepted together with the prayer of the many. For the Holy One, blessed be He, never rejects the prayer of the many.

But for the Musaf prayer, since its time is the entire day and some pray earlier and some later, there is reason to be concerned that at the time he is praying, there is no congregation in the world praying this prayer, and his prayer may be set aside.

Therefore, one should be careful in the summer not to pray weekday Shacharis in the first hour, for certainly the congregation is not praying at that time nowadays.

And in the winter, one should not delay past two hours into the day, for certainly all places have already prayed, and an individual must be careful not to pray in the third hour.

Similarly, an individual should be careful not to blow the mitzvah shofar until after three hours into the day, for the reason explained above.

15. One should say, “Ve’ein lefareish eilum shemecha,” but not, “Ve’ein pirush, etc.”

Chapter 592

The repetition of the Amidah and the order of the Tekios

1. When praying Musaf with a congregation, the Chachomim instituted to blow tarat for malchiyos, tarat for zichronos, and tarat for shofros. The custom is to blow twice: once during the silent prayer and once during the repetition by the shatz.

2. These tekios are called “tekios meumed,” because even the listeners must stand while hearing these tekios, as opposed to the “tekios meyushev,” where only the one blowing needs to stand.

3. It is proper to blow: tashrat, tashat, tarat for malchiyos, and the same for zichronos and the same for shofros, in order to fulfill all doubts regarding the “teruah” of the Torah.

4. Some have the custom to blow for malchiyos: one time tashrat; for zichronos: one time tashat; and for shofros: one time tarat.

5. Others have the custom to blow: tashrat, tashat, tarat for malchiyos, and the same for zichronos and the same for shofros. This is the best of the customs.

6. The custom is to say each time after blowing, “Hayom haras olam, etc.” and “Areshes sefaseinu, etc.” Even when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and we do not blow, we say “Hayom haras olam, etc.” but we do not say “Areshes sefaseinu, etc.”

7. One who prays Musaf alone does not interrupt to blow the shofar in the blessings of the Amidah. Even if he has someone to blow for him, he does not interrupt to listen to the shofar blasts, for the tekios were only instituted with a congregation. It is best to hear the sounds that the Torah obligates one to hear—that is, tashrat three times, tashat three times, and tarat three times—before the Musaf prayer. One must be careful not to interrupt with speech between the tekios meumed and the tekios meyushev. This applies not only to the one blowing who made the blessing on the shofar, but also to the congregation who did not make their own beracha; they too should not speak from the beginning of the tekios meyushev until after the tekios meumed. If one transgressed and did speak, whether the one blowing or the listeners, they do not need to make a beracha for the tekios meumed.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. Nevertheless, the blasts that one is obligated to hear by Torah law—namely, three sets of tashrat, three sets of tashat, and three sets of tarat—it is proper to hear them before the Musaf prayer.

2. One must be careful not to interrupt with conversation between the standing blasts and the seated blasts. This applies not only to the one blowing the shofar, who recited the blessing over the shofar, but even to the congregation who did not recite the blessing themselves, but heard the blessing from the blower—they too should not converse from the beginning of the seated blasts until after the standing blasts.

3. If one did converse, whether the blower or the listeners, there is no need to recite the blessing again for the standing blasts.

8. During the actual shofar blasts, both for the seated blasts and the standing blasts, it is forbidden to spit, since one must hear the entire blast from beginning to end, even if it is very long. Therefore, young children who have not reached the age of education should not be brought to shul during the blasts, so they do not disturb the listeners. However, women may take them with them, since they are exempt.

9. The custom is that for the seated blasts, the blower ascends the bimah and blows there, out of respect for the community. But for the standing blasts, since they are in the middle of the prayer, we do not trouble him to ascend; rather, he stands in his place and blows.

10. The blasts that are sounded during the blessings should not be blown by the shatz who leads Musaf, lest he become confused and be unable to return to his prayer without distraction. However, if he is confident that he can return to his prayer without distraction, or if he is praying from a siddur, in which case he is certainly confident, he may blow. The one who blows the seated blasts should also blow the standing blasts, for “one who begins a mitzvah is told to finish it,” unless he is the shatz for Musaf and is not confident that he can return to his prayer without distraction.

11. However, nowadays, in some places the custom is to give the standing blasts to another person, so the first blower never acquired the right to the standing blasts. Therefore, it is permitted to give them to another person in any place.

Whether the Berachos and the Tekios Prevent One Another

1. The three blessings recited in Musaf of Rosh Hashanah—malchiyos, zichronos, and shofros—prevent one another. If one does not know all three blessings, one should not say any of them, not even the one that one knows.

2. The order of the blessings is also essential. If one recited zichronos or shofros before malchiyos, or shofros before zichronos, one has not fulfilled the obligation.

3. Likewise, the shofar blasts prevent one another. If one only knows how to blow a tekiah but does not know how to blow a teruah, one should not blow at all, for there is no mitzvah unless one can perform tarat three times. However, if one knows how to blow what we call teruah but does not know how to blow shevarim, one should blow tarat three times. The same applies if one knows how to blow shevarim but does not know how to blow what we call teruah; one should blow tashat three times, for perhaps what one knows is the teruah that the Torah intended, and thus one fulfills the mitzvah.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. Similarly, the different shofar sounds are dependent on each other. If one knows how to blow tekiah but does not know how to blow teruah, he should not blow at all, for there is no mitzvah here unless he blows tekiah, teruah, and tekiah three times.

2. However, if one knows how to blow our teruah but does not know how to blow shevarim, he should blow teruah-tekiah-teruah three times. Similarly, if he knows how to blow shevarim but does not know our teruah, he should blow tekiah-shevarim-tekiah three times. For perhaps what he knows is the teruah mentioned in the Torah, and thus he fulfills the mitzvah as it is stated.

4. The tekios meumed do not prevent the recitation of the blessings. If there is no one who knows how to blow the shofar, the shatz should still recite all nine blessings. Similarly, the blessings do not prevent the shofar blasts; if they do not know how to recite these blessings, they should still blow the three sets of shofar blasts. If the nine blessings were recited with a minyan but the shofar was not blown until after the shatz finished the prayer, they have fulfilled their obligation.

Chapter 594

An individual cannot fulfill his obligation by listening to his friend’s prayer

1. Although with the nine blessings of Musaf on Rosh Hashanah, even an expert can fulfill his obligation through the shatz's prayer, nevertheless, if there are not nine people answering amen after his blessings, a person does not fulfill his obligation through his prayer. This applies even to one who is not an expert and does not know how to pray on his own.

Even if it is a case where there is no need to answer amen after his blessings—for example, if he has not yet prayed Musaf silently and therefore needs to pray for himself silently, but he prays aloud in order to fulfill the obligation of one who is not an expert, and thus even if amen is not answered after his blessings, there is no concern of a blessing in vain—nevertheless, if there are not nine answering amen, his prayer is not called the prayer of the community, and one does not fulfill his obligation by listening, unless he hears the prayer of the community.

But for the shofar blasts, a person can fulfill his obligation by listening, even if he knows how to blow himself, and even if there is no community listening with him.

Chapter 595

One who does not know how to blow the shofar nor how to daven

1. If someone is not knowledgeable in the order of Musaf and also does not know how to blow the shofar, or he does not have a shofar, and there are two cities before him—one where they know how to blow the shofar but do not know Musaf, and one where they know Musaf but do not have a shofar or do not know how to blow it—where should he go? He should go to the place where they blow the shofar.

Even if he is uncertain whether they blow the shofar in that city, and in the other city he is certain they recite Musaf, he should go to the city where he might hear the shofar. For the sound of the shofar is a Torah commandment, and the Musaf prayer was instituted by the Rabbis. A doubtful Torah obligation takes precedence over a certain rabbinic obligation.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

1. Someone who is not proficient in the order of the Musaf prayer, and also does not know how to blow the shofar, or does not have a shofar, and before him are two towns—one where they know how to blow the shofar but are not proficient in the Musaf prayer, and one where they are proficient in the Musaf prayer but do not have a shofar or do not know how to blow it—should go to the place where they blow the shofar. Even if the blowing of the shofar is uncertain for him, and the Musaf prayer is certain, he should still go to the place of the shofar. This is because the shofar blowing is a Torah obligation, while the Musaf prayer is a Rabbinic obligation. And a doubt regarding a Torah obligation takes precedence over a certainty regarding a Rabbinic obligation.

2. If one is able to go to a place where they are praying, and there is still time in the day to hear the shofar blasts afterward in a place where they blow the shofar—for example, if it is within the techum, or he can send a non-Jew to bring the shofar here, even from outside the techum—he should fulfill both mitzvos. For the entire day is valid for blowing the shofar. However, he should not first go to the place where they blow the shofar and then to the place where they are praying, since the time for the Musaf prayer is shorter than the time for blowing the shofar. Ideally, Musaf should not be delayed beyond seven hours into the day.

Rest of the laws for the Shofar

1. The custom is not to blow a “truah gedolah” after the prayers without a tekiah in order to confuse the Satan. The custom is to repeat and blow thirty sounds. The custom is to blow one hundred sounds on Rosh Hashanah. That is, after the prayers (in the Kadish Tiskabel, tashrat, tashat, tarat) to complete one hundred sounds together with the tekios meyushev and tekios meumed.

2. After all these sets of shofar blasts have been completed, one should not blow the shofar further without purpose, for blowing the shofar is Rabbinically prohibited on Yom Tov. Even someone who will be blowing on the second day of Rosh Hashanah is forbidden to practice on the first day. All the more so, one should not take the shofar into the public domain to blow a blast that is not needed today. However, it is permitted to tell a minor to blow in order to learn, whether the minor has reached the age of education or not. A minor is permitted to blow all day, even after he has already heard the blasts in shul.

Is it permissible to fast on Rosh Hashanah?

1. It is forbidden to fast on Rosh Hashanah and on Shabbos Teshuvah. It is a mitzvah to eat, drink, and rejoice on Rosh Hashanah. However, people should not eat to full satisfaction, so that they do not become lightheaded, and the fear of Hashem should be upon them.

2. One who is accustomed to fasting on Rosh Hashanah and changes his custom, if he is not concerned for his health, does not need to fast for the rest of his life, but he does need to annul his vow as with other vows.

3. One who fasts on Rosh Hashanah must spend the entire day learning or saying supplications.

4. One who fasts on Rosh Hashanah or on any other Yom Tov is forbidden to cook or perform other types of work related to food preparation for others.

Summary of the Laws of Rosh Hashanah

4. One who fasts on Rosh Hashanah or on another Yom Tov is forbidden to cook or perform other food-related labors for the sake of others.

5. The law regarding one who once fasted a tanis chalom on Rosh Hashanah.

6. One who fasted a tanis chalom on Rosh Hashanah, if he is not concerned for his wellbeing, does not need to fast for the rest of his life at all.

7. One who fasted a tanis chalom on Rosh Hashanah does not need to fast again on a weekday to make up for fasting on Rosh Hashanah.

8. One who accepted upon themselves to fast on Rosh Hashanah must perform annulment of the vow in order to eat.

9. Those who have the custom to fast on Rosh Hashanah should not recite the “aneynu” prayer.

The Law for Tzidkascha on Rosh Hashanah

1. We do not say “tzidkascha” at Minchah on Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbos.

Laws for the Second Night of Rosh Hashanah that Falls on Saturday Night

1. When the second night of Rosh Hashanah falls on Motzaei Shabbos, in the amida we say “vatodieinu” before “vatiten lanu”, as we do on other yomim tovim that fall on Motzaei Shabbos.

The order of Kiddush is: 1. Yayin (wine), 2. Kiddush, 3. Neir (candle), 4. Havdala, 5. Zeman (shehechiyanu). This is the same order as on other yomim tovim that fall on Motzaei Shabbos.

An Egg Laid on Yom Tov and the Order of Kiddush

1. Even those living in Eretz Yisroel observe two days of Rosh Hashanah.

2. Rosh Hashanah is different from the other festivals. On other festivals, an egg laid by a chicken on the first day of Yom Tov is permitted on the second day of Yom Tov.

3. The two days of Rosh Hashanah are considered one long day. An egg laid on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, or something detached or captured on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, is prohibited on the second day just as it is prohibited (because of muktzeh and nolad) on the first day.

4. He explains why Rosh Hashanah is considered like one day.

5. One must recite “shehechiyanu” for Kiddush on the second night and for the shofar on the second day.

6. Ideally, at Kiddush on the second night, it is good to wear a new garment that requires a “shehechiyanu” at the time of wearing, or to take a new fruit and place it before oneself, and recite “shehechiyanu”, having in mind also the garment or the fruit. (Seemingly, the woman’s candle lighting on the second night should be as close as possible to Kiddush, and she should have in mind in the “shehechiyanu” blessing also the garment or the fruit.) If one does not have a new garment or a new fruit, nevertheless, one should still recite “shehechiyanu”.

From Sefer HaMinhagim, p. 56: The tapuach is eaten on the first night at the beginning of the meal, and the new fruit on the second night before washing for the meal.

Blowing the Shofar on the Second Day of Rosh Hashanah

7. For the blowing of the shofar on the second day, it is best that the one who blows should put on a new garment, and it should be on him at the time of the blessing of “shehechiyanu.”

If the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and the shofar was not blown, it is not necessary to wear a new garment at the time of the blowing on the second day.

Order of the Second Day of Rosh Hashanah

1. On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, we pray Shacharis and Musaf as on the first day. The Torah reading is “And G‑d tested Avraham” (Bereishis 22:1) until the end of the section (Bereishis 22:24). The Maftir Torah reading is the same as yesterday. The Haftorah is from Yirmiyah, “So says…” until “Is Ephraim a precious son to Me…” (Yirmiyah 31:1–19).

2. On motzoei Rosh Hashanah, we recite Havdalah over a cup, as on motzoei Shabbos. However, we do not recite the blessing over besamim or over the fire, as is the case at the end of other yomim tovim.

Order for the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah

1. On the day after Rosh Hashanah, we fast. It is a public fast day.

2. On all the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we increase in prayer and supplication. The custom is to say “avinu malkeinu” in the evening and morning. Except on Shabbos, and also not on erev Shabbos after Minchah, it is not said.

3. Every day, except Shabbos, we say viduy three times before dawn, except on erev Yom Kippur, when it is said only once. (The Chabad custom is not to say selichos during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, nor on erev Yom Kippur.)

4. If there is a bris between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we do not say tachnun or “vehu rachum.” However, we do say “avinu malkeinu,” “keil erech apayim,” and “lamenatzeiach.” (According to Chabad custom, we do not say “avinu malkeinu,” “keil erech apayim,” or “lamenatzeiach.”)

5. A cheirem is not placed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and we do not administer an oath in Beis Din during these days. However, to adjudicate between a man and his fellow, it is certainly a great mitzvah to judge and remove theft from the one holding it. If the case requires an oath between them, the judgment is postponed until after Yom Kippur.

Laws of Aseres Yemei Teshuvah

1. During the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, one should be careful not to use pas palter, bread baked by non-Jewish bakers. One who cannot bake for himself can kosher the oven in which the non-Jews are baking by throwing in one splinter of wood.

If he is unable to bake by himself, he should make the oven in which non-Jews bake fit for use by having a Jew throw a small stick into the oven.

2. During the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, every person should search and examine their actions, and repent from them.

A questionable sin requires more teshuva than a sin of which one is certain.

Laws of Rosh Hashanah

A questionable sin requires more teshuva than a certain sin.
