Shalom u'Vrachah!
To all participants in the annual dinner for the educational institution "Oholei Torah," may Hashem be upon them and grant them life—greetings and blessings!
On various occasions, the special significance of this year as a Shemitah (Sabbatical) year has been emphasized. Although the mitzvot connected with Shemitat Karkaot (letting the land rest) are not practiced outside of Eretz Yisrael, like other mitzvot not observed at this time or outside of Eretz Yisrael, they exist spiritually even now and everywhere. This is because all matters of Torah are eternal and above time and place.
And since they exist here as well, it means their content must also be expressed in actual deed, for action is the main thing. The essence of Shemitah is that although a Jew owns a field that belongs to him according to Torah—which obligates him in tithes and other commandments—nevertheless, Hashem says: Ki Li HaAretz ("For the land is Mine")—a Jew must recognize that the true owner is Hashem. This recognition is not just a thought but must be expressed practically by leaving the field fallow and not working it for the entire Shemitah year. Even the produce of that year does not belong to the owner but is ownerless for everyone—even for animals of the field.
And like all mitzvot that must be performed with joy, so too one fulfills the mitzvah of Shemitah with happiness, knowing how precious a mitzvah is—and there is no greater joy than fulfilling Hashem's will.
Regarding Shemitah, Hashem has said there will be a supernatural reward even materially: that the yield from the sixth year will suffice for three years.
One lesson from this—at all times and in all places—is that a Jew should know: although Torah says he should engage in making a living through natural means (Sheshet Yamim Ta'avod Ve'asita Kol Melachtecha—"Six days you shall labor and do all your work"), when it comes to Judaism—to matters of Torah and mitzvot—he is entirely above nature and stands not only under Divine Providence but also under miraculous conduct.
Just as Shemitah is not an issue only for special days but for an entire year, so too Judaism in its fullest sense is not just for exceptional days like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or Shabbat alone; rather it must be observed throughout the entire year—on weekdays, Shabbat, festivals, etc.—and not as a burden or hardship but with joy and happiness in performing mitzvot.
This approach to Torah and mitzvot must naturally be instilled in Jewish children from their earliest youth. This is precisely the mission of Oholei Torah—to educate Jewish children in Torah with awe of Heaven and joy in mitzvah observance—in harmony with what was said above—and they are succeeding in this mission.
It is hoped that participants at this gathering—and generally all activists and friends of this most important educational institution—will respond generously and provide their fullest support to Oholei Torah in keeping with the supernatural theme of this Shemitah year.
And Hashem will surely bless each one—measure for measure—with supernatural abundance in everything needed both materially and spiritually together.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Shemitah’s lessons apply everywhere: true ownership belongs to Hashem, which should inspire practical action infused with joy. Supporting Jewish education like Oholei Torah brings blessings beyond nature—in both material needs and spiritual growth.
