B"H, Motzaei Shabbat Kodesh—Chazon, on the eve of Thursday, Menachem Av 5, 5732. Brooklyn, NY.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
On this day, the yahrzeit of the AriZal—especially marking four hundred years since his passing—it is a particularly auspicious time to reflect on the upright paths which, in the words of Rabbeinu HaZaken in his Iggeres HaKodesh, he taught us from his ways so that we may walk in his paths. Surely this is one reason why these specific ways and paths were revealed by him and his students and became known throughout all Jewish communities.
Although who can claim to serve in the holy work of this "man of G‑d," the great saintly AriZal—surely only a tiny fraction of his immense goodness and light reaches us all—but together with the revelation and dissemination of these practices comes a special empowerment and great assistance to follow these ways and paths, in some measure resembling that holy service.
Here are two or three of these upright ways and general practices brought in the writings of the AriZal: In Torah: "I saw my teacher (the AriZal) exert himself like a lion with strength when engaged in halachah until he was exhausted and sweating..." The Torah is called "Toshia" because it weakens the strength of those who study it; therefore one should toil and expend effort when learning halachah.
In mitzvos: Regarding tzedakah and mitzvos he was not stingy at all... As stated in Zohar Parshas Terumah (and there: 'One who wishes to engage in a mitzvah should not do so cheaply or for free but... with full reward').
In all mitzvos: One should be joyful when performing a mitzvah... as it says in the verse: 'Because you did not serve Hashem with joy and gladness of heart.'
It is clear that reflecting on these points—in addition to contemplating what the AriZal writes at the beginning of Shaar HaMitzvos that a person is obligated to fulfill all mitzvos, and as long as he has not completed them his soul is lacking (and about him it says 'anyone with a blemish shall not approach'), as well as regarding Torah study—toil in pshat, remez, drush, sod—as much as one can grasp; strive to find a teacher who will teach him—this contemplation will lead to action: fulfilling these matters practically and with true joy. Surely he will succeed, as it says: 'In You Hashem I have trusted; let me never be ashamed.' This will also hasten fulfillment of the promise that these days will be transformed into joy and gladness with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu speedily in our days.
Blessings, M. Schneersohn
Their letter from Motzaei Tammuz etc. has been received. In response to their questions: Regarding the scope of regulations—in general there is an instruction to proceed from less to more (and if you try for too much you may lose everything). Especially (when much is involved in this case)—it requires clarification on site as obvious—and discussion from time to time if conditions change etc. It is clear that order must be maintained in yeshiva even during busy times—and on the contrary; but this pertains to yeshiva administration.
Their letter from 15 Menachem Av and previous ones have been received. May Hashem grant them success to strengthen their activities and develop them both internally and externally together.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that reflecting on—and acting upon—the AriZal's example brings blessing: exertion in Torah study, generosity in mitzvos, serving with joy, practical orderliness, and adaptability lead both to personal growth and hasten redemption.
