On Not Separating a Child from His Mother for Emotional Wellbeing

The Rebbe writes that a mother caring for her child gives her strength and support, and separating them could have unpredictable consequences. He advises easing the mother's burden as much as possible, but not to separate them.

וסברא חזקה לומר – שזה שאמה תי' מטפלת (כפי אפשריותה) בבנה (אחי') שי' – נותן לה כח וחיזוק. ובאם יפרידו ביניהם – קשה לשער התוצאות.

ולכן תקל על אמה כפי האפשרי, אבל לא להפריד כו'.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

There is a strong reason and logic to say—that the fact that her mother, may she live, cares (to the best of her ability) for her son (my brother), may he live—gives her strength and support. And if they are separated—it is hard to estimate the consequences.

Therefore, ease things for her mother as much as possible, but do not separate them, etc. [Let him] remain in his mother's home.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that a mother's connection with her child is vital for both their wellbeing; efforts should be made to support the mother without separating them.
