Prioritizing One's Main Role and Avoiding Harmful Distractions

The Rebbe writes that one should focus on their primary role and not allow themselves to be distracted by other matters, unless it does not harm their main responsibility. Only when it will not interfere with the main task may one engage in other activities.

Shalom u'Vrachah! I have said this several times—that first and foremost, everything must be organized and in order.

First of all, the role that he took upon himself willingly is the main foundation... And as is his way, after some time he began to look for something else specifically, etc., and he promised that it would not cause harm, etc. Regarding practical action—even now, his main role is the foundation... Only in a way that it will not harm the foundation may he involve himself in other matters. I will mention at the Tziyun.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one's primary responsibility must always come first; only when additional pursuits do not detract from this main role should they be considered.
