Kvod HaVavac"h Iy"a Nu"n Bachur Me'am u'Muram Me'am v'Doresh Tov l'Amo Ba'al Middot Terumiyot Anaf Etz Avot Mo"h Shalom u'Vrachah! Shneur Zalman Sheyichyeh
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I am uncomfortable troubling you with what follows, but since this matter came to me unintentionally, through Divine Providence, I feel I have no right to ignore it. Even if it concerned only one individual—since one Jewish soul is an entire world—how much more so in our case, where he is a family man and his fate affects his wife and children as well.
The subject is Mr. . . who, as you write, approached you on 3.5.70 with a request for clemency, and several important people in the USA recommended him. Now I too have been asked to support his request. It should be noted that those who approached me about this are not relatives of the person in question; rather, they are trustworthy individuals with no personal interests or inclinations and are not compromisers at all.
As for the matter itself: according to the copy I received, you have already been approached at length and in detail about this issue, so I will not take up your time by repeating everything again. Especially since this concerns a matter of clemency (chaninah), from the root "chen" (grace), which is above logic; and particularly since from the copies sent to me there is also logical basis and foundation for clemency.
Merit is orchestrated for an auspicious day—to write this letter on a special day—Lag BaOmer. As I concluded my general letter for this day: it is the day of rejoicing of Rashbi (Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai), whose crowning declaration regarding the entire world was his statement in Torah truth before the true G‑d that he could exempt the whole world from judgment.
With esteem, respect, and blessing.
P.S. Surely my letter from 3 Iyar was received.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that advocating for another's wellbeing—especially on an auspicious day like Lag BaOmer—carries great spiritual weight. Every Jewish soul matters deeply; acts of kindness can influence outcomes beyond logic when performed with sincerity and trustworthiness.
