נזדמן לי לפני ימים אחדים, והיום פעם שני', לקרוא על דבר יובל השבעים שלו. ואצטרף לקהל מברכיו לאחל לו אריכות ימים ושנים טובות. וכמנהג יהודי לצרף תיכף ומיד

חכמינו ז"ל – טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות גם יחד, שהוא הטוב האמיתי.
והרי חודש אדר ענינו לא שמחה סתם כי אם

ועד
דלא ידעי.
ארשה לעצמי להביע עוד מאיחולי, ובטח בלאו הכי יחשדני בזה, אשר יהי רצון שהתזוזה והתנועה של "שיבה אל המקור" תתבצר בחייו במעשה בפועל, בחיים המעשיים כל יום. ובפרט אשר השפעה לו בכגון זה בחוג מסויים שספק אם יקבלו השפעה ממישהו אחר, ופעולה מקורית (תרתי משמע) ומפתיעה מצדו – בודאי שהרבה ממנו יראו וכן יעשו.
בתקופתנו זו, רבו הפירושים בכל ענין ודבר, ועד לפירושים סותרים ומשונים. אבל כוונתי בהאמור היא

הידוע "לדעת זה התינוק", או במאַמע-לשון – גאָר פשוט. וכיון שבמשך כמה שנים ביקטרינוסלב הי' מחפש דוקא זה שהוא נועז ונגד הזרם, אין לך נגד הזרם בחוג מעריציו – ממפנה ושינוי בכיוון האמור.
פשוט שאין מתחילים להדר בקיום מצוות מעשיות בכדי להראות שיכולים ללכת נגד הזרם וכו', אבל בתור מסייע הרי גם תכונת נפש זו פעילה היא.
ולהתמי' מה יום מיומיים, המענה (באם יש צורך בזה) – יובל שבעים שנה.
בכבוד, ובברכה לשנים טובות ומוצלחות ולבשורות טובות.

נ.ב. מפני הנימוס צריך הייתי לחכות עד שאבחן בתגובת מר על מכתבי זה, ורק לאחרי זה להביע תקותי שישלח לכאן מפרסומיו (נוסף על משלוח הא': ס' "שירים", שני כרכים). אבל כיון שהמכתבים שלי מתאחרים ביותר וביותר, זאת אומרת שבלאו הכי אין מגדירים אותי כאיש הנוהג על פי הנוהג וחוקי הפרוטוכול, הריני מצרף בקשתי זו בשולי מכתבי זה.

Shalom u'Vrachah!
A few days ago, and today for the second time, I happened to read about your seventieth jubilee. I join the community of well-wishers in wishing you long life and good years. As is the Jewish custom, I immediately add a saying of our Sages—'good to Heaven and good to people together,' which is true goodness. The month of Adar is not just about joy but increasing in joy—until one does not know.
I allow myself to further express my wishes—and surely you would suspect me of this anyway—that it should be G‑d's will that the movement and return to the source be strengthened in your life through practical action in daily living. Especially since you have influence in a particular circle where it is doubtful they would accept influence from anyone else; an original (in both senses) and surprising action from you will certainly inspire many to see and do likewise.
In our times there are many interpretations on every matter—even contradictory or strange ones. But my intention here is in the well-known style understood by a child—or in mamaloshen: very simple. Since for several years in Yekaterinoslav you sought specifically what is bold and against the current—there is nothing more 'against the current' among your admirers than a shift and change in this direction. Obviously one does not begin being meticulous in practical mitzvah observance just to show one can go against the current, etc., but as an aid this soul trait is also active.
And for those who wonder what makes today different from other days—the answer (if needed) is: seventy-year jubilee.

P.S. Out of politeness I should have waited until I saw your response to this letter before expressing my hope that you will send here some of your publications (in addition to sending vol. 1: Sefer Shirim, two volumes). But since my letters are delayed more and more, meaning that I am not considered someone who acts according to protocol anyway, I am adding this request at the end of this letter.
