Spiritual Growth Must Accompany Material Progress

The Rebbe writes that as one advances materially, spiritual growth must also increase. Using the example of Chanukah lights, he emphasizes that progress in physical life should be matched by advancement in Torah, mitzvos, and character refinement.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Mr. Bentzion Goldberg, Shalom u'Vrachah! I received your letter of December 5th with pleasure, confirming my previous letter. Considering that perhaps we would see each other at the farbrengen of Yud Kislev, as you have attended several times before, I wanted to confirm this letter in person, in line with the saying of our Sages: 'It is a greater mitzvah to do it oneself than through a messenger,' though a personal letter is also no more than a messenger. Assuming you have traveled away, I am confirming this letter in writing.

At the same time, I want to express a wish based on one of the hints from these Chanukah days we are now leaving: Even though one fulfilled the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah candle on the first night to its fullest by lighting one candle, every Jew is shown that one should not be satisfied with the same state for tomorrow; rather, since another day has been added to one's physical life span, there must also be an elevation in one's soul and all matters connected to it—first and foremost in Torah and mitzvos—which are themselves like candles and light: 'For a mitzvah is a candle and Torah is light.' No matter how good one's spiritual state may be on a given day, it is not good enough for the next day; just as one lights more than one candle on the second night of Chanukah—otherwise he would be lacking in fulfilling the mitzvah as it should be.

I do not believe my role is to preach sermons nor do I think you wish to hear them. However, what I wrote above—in addition to my wish that this Chanukah lesson be fulfilled for you and for all of us—is an answer to one of the most painful problems of our time: namely, the notion that as people become more advanced and educated they need fewer restraints and limitations—or put differently: that negative commandments and their stringencies were only needed when people were wild or uncultured. The answer found in this Chanukah lesson is quite the opposite: progress and growth in any area of human life must be accompanied by progress and growth in spiritual life—in other words: soul-life—or more simply put: in ethics, Chassidus, etc. On the contrary: if material progress is not accompanied by spiritual advancement, it often leads—unfortunately very often—to regression in soul-life; for then balance between them is disturbed. A setback in spiritual progress inevitably brings about regression and even destruction in material life.

Sadly our generation has seen many examples of this—as Scripture says: 'They are wise to do evil'—that increased freedom used simply to free oneself from all sorts of boundaries has led also to material decadence.

It is noteworthy—as you have surely heard—that when planning flights to the moon precautions are taken so that earthly bacteria and viruses are not brought there because it is unknown whether under those conditions they can be resisted; likewise vice versa. Fantasizing about walking on the moon leads people to seek protection against possible local viruses. In other words: progress up to flying to the moon must be accompanied by additional precautions and restrictions—not just as a matter of convenience but as a matter of life itself. This same idea applies regarding progress in every technological field.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true advancement requires both material progress and corresponding spiritual growth; without this balance, even great achievements can lead to decline rather than improvement.
