Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter and its conclusion in which you express a desire to come here to receive guidance regarding the dispute with the company, etc. The question is understandable and also simple: even if there were no expenses or effort involved at all, it would still be a waste of time, etc., since how to behave and what to do must be decided on the spot in consultation with local friends on site, including others as well, etc. Especially since there will certainly be several changes from time to time as has happened in the past, and so on. Due to the magnitude of the question, this letter is being sent urgently.

However, it is appropriate to add here—with apologies—that apparently your conduct now is as it was previously: not including anyone else for consultation and therefore also not telling them everything that happens—not only after the fact but even during the process and even before acting—contrary to the instruction of our Sages of blessed memory. As related about even Rav Ashi—who sealed all of the Babylonian Talmud and certainly was the authority in his city in every detail—regarding a question about an animal's kashrus: nevertheless his consistent conduct was "makhnif u'maytei lehu l'kulahu tabchei d'mata machtya amar ki heichi d'leimati mishum kashura" (Sanhedrin 7b; he would gather all the butchers of Mata Machasya so that if there was a koshering issue they would come). This story does not appear in the Talmudic section discussing humility but rather in a section discussing leadership conduct for a city leader.

It is also clear that Torah does not tell beautiful stories just for their beauty; every matter and detail in Torah is an instruction. Since Torah is eternal, its instruction is also eternal for all places and times.

I have restrained myself until now from commenting on this because I hoped and expected that eventually you would come to this conclusion yourself—especially since I was told some time ago that people had complained to you about this and demanded change. But apparently from your letter and from everything regarding the company, this matter still needs correction. The correction is not to travel overseas as a one-time solution—which as above has no point—but rather local consultation as above and learning from this event for future occasions as above.

I was pleased by the report I received about how you managed the inauguration of the youth center in Kfar Chabad and the impression it made on those present. I hope you see there is no contradiction between these lines and what was said earlier; on the contrary—since you are endowed with talents, if you use them properly—and even more than properly—there are great prospects for much success.

In such matters it is all the more necessary to act like Rav Ashi; after all, any loss here is not minor or small but great and significant.

May it be G‑d's will that my words be accepted as they are—my intention is not as a complaint but as guidance regarding something needing change—and most importantly: that they have their intended effect.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that important decisions should involve consultation with others locally rather than acting alone or seeking distant advice. Drawing from Rav Ashi's example, he emphasizes humility and collaboration as keys to effective leadership and lasting success.
