Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Friday night of Parashat Kedoshim, in which you write about your son shiyichyeh. In general—and unfortunately—such a case is not rare in our times. You have surely also heard from the treating doctors that there are several similar cases. I write this not because "misery loves company," which may not be appropriate here, but to emphasize that the doctors have much experience in this field and that intensive research is being conducted regarding treatment methods and cures. Therefore, it is clear there is no reason to make predictions that the chances are poor or similar statements; at the very least, one must add that this is only according to the current state of medical knowledge. In this area specifically, research is extremely intensive since many people need it.

A second point in my writing: It is worthwhile to stay connected with those involved in this research or those close to them and ask them from time to time what new developments have occurred in this field. The emphasis is on those engaged in the actual research because it takes a long time for results to reach treating physicians; these doctors usually hear about them from medical journals whose articles are published only after a treatment has been tested and proven over a long period.

In similar cases, good results have been seen when the person needing healing is brought out of his four cubits by asking him to participate in an activity or institution as a favor. Usually, when asked directly for their participation, people refuse because they feel it’s just an attempt to do them a favor or heal them. However, when the approach is that a certain institution or activity needs their help and participation—and it cannot proceed otherwise—then often they agree to help and gradually become more involved with others. But as mentioned above, one must speak in such a way that does not arouse suspicion that there is any trickery intended just to get him out of his routine.

With G‑d’s help I will mention his name at the resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal according to your letter.

Knowing you as I do, I certainly do not need to remind you that increasing Torah study and mitzvah observance increases G‑d’s blessing—He who heals all flesh and performs wonders. And regarding matters connected with Ein Sof blessed be He—that is Torah and mitzvot—the better things are already going, there is always room for further increase (which is why everyone is commanded to continually ascend in holiness). When it comes to someone who has public influence over his environment and a wide circle of people, fully utilizing his influence for instilling Judaism and its values uncompromisingly is among his main tasks; as our Sages say: this is considered a mitzvah one must be especially careful with.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that alongside seeking expert medical advice and staying informed about new treatments through direct contact with researchers, involving patients in meaningful communal activities can aid recovery. Increasing Torah study and mitzvah observance brings additional blessing from G‑d.
