בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מכ' כסלו, וכן נתקבל מכתבו הקודם. ותודה רבה על הבשורה הטובה שכבר חזר לביתו והולך ומתרפא בעזהשי"ת. ויהי רצון שתהא רפואתו שלמה וגם קרובה. ובודאי בדכוותי' הסימן על זה יהי' כשיבשר מעבודתו בפרסום תורתם של ראשונים כמנהגו ועבודתו בקדש בעבר.
ולפלא קצת שבמכתביו לא הזכיר על דבר ההתקדמות בזה במשך החדשים הרבים אשר לא התראינו וגם לא התכתבנו.

I pleasantly received your letter from the 20th of Kislev, as well as your previous letter. Thank you very much for the good news that you have already returned home and are recovering with the help of Hashem. May it be His will that your recovery be complete and also speedy.
Certainly, as is customary among our circles, the sign for this will be when you inform me about your work in publicizing the teachings of the early sages as was your practice in your holy work in the past. It is somewhat surprising that in your letters you did not mention any progress in this area during the many months we have not seen or corresponded with each other.
As is customary among Jews to find a hint and connection to their life matters in the weekly Torah portion or mitzvahs relevant to those days—so too here there is a clear lesson from these days of Chanukah: The law follows Beit Hillel that we increase and add to the candles and light; and 'there is no light but Torah,' as it says: 'For a mitzvah is a candle and Torah is light.'
Since you wrote your letter on the day after the good news—the 19th of Kislev, which is the day of redemption of our master the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad Chassidus—this too adds that it is your role to spread even the secrets of Torah until it fulfills what is written: 'Your wellsprings shall spread outward.' As we once spoke regarding your grandfather Haraha"g Haraha"ch Haraha"tz etc., the Chatam Sofer z"l who also engaged in the inner dimension of Torah—as is evident in several places in his books and even more so from his conduct. And indeed, a father bequeaths all his wisdom.
The miracle of Chanukah was with oil—which in Torah hints at its inner dimension; its revealed aspect is called water.
With honor and blessings for a complete recovery and good news regarding all mentioned above—and for Chanukah days filled with joy and light.
