Mr. David Rokach.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from Thursday, 5 Adar II, with its enclosure. In it you write about your position in South Africa, the conditions there, and your current situation. You conclude with a question about whether you should remain in your current place or return to Eretz Yisrael.

It is well known in general—and especially to those who reflect on the situation of our people, Bnei Yisrael, wherever they are, and particularly in the Diaspora—that the essential and primary issue regarding our nation's survival both in the Diaspora and in our Holy Land is the education of the younger generation: that it be a traditional Jewish education founded on Torah and mitzvot—practical commandments in daily life.

This is contrary to those who mistakenly think this matter is more relevant abroad and less so—or not at all—in Eretz Yisrael; for even there it is a vital issue. It is what gives hope for fulfilling the promise that "the land will not vomit out its inhabitants," G‑d forbid.

The general point is that because of our sins (the cause) we were exiled from our land (the effect), and the only hope to remove the effect is solely by removing the cause—this is clear.

Certainly for someone like you who recently was in Eretz HaKodesh and saw firsthand phenomena such as Canaanites, those who leave Israel, secularists, etc.—there's no need to elaborate further.

I will just add that educating Bnei Yisrael in exile is also vital for sustaining Jews living in Eretz Yisrael—not only from a practical perspective such as aliyah or fundraising (which can be seen with one's own eyes), but also from an inner perspective which is equally essential: all of Israel is one body; strengthening one part—or G‑d forbid weakening it—affects all parts of the body.

From all this my position regarding your question becomes clear: your educational work where you are now constitutes a mitzvah that cannot be done by others; therefore it is your sacred duty to continue this work.

The merit of many will assist you so that you increase your efforts to instill in students love and awe of Hashem—the source and root for fulfilling positive and negative commandments in daily life—including diligence and perseverance in Torah study, Torah of life.

May it be G‑d's will that you succeed ever more so with joy and gladness of heart.

The time itself inspires this: these days of Purim—especially according to our Sages' account that Haman's decree was nullified through children who were educated by Mordechai with self-sacrifice for Torah and mitzvah observance.

With honor and blessing for good news in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn

P.S. Of course you may notify others about my letter and my opinion on this matter if you find it appropriate. Also to note: Dr. Chaim Chamiel whom you mention seems to be the one who sent me his books; we are corresponding by letter. I have heard much about his heartfelt connection to Torah and mitzvot.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Jewish education rooted in Torah and mitzvot is vital everywhere—both outside Israel and within—and urges educators not to abandon their posts where their unique influence cannot be replaced by others.
