Marriage Proposals, Parental Disagreements, and Torah Observance

The Rebbe advises that when parents disagree about a marriage proposal, efforts should be made for them to reach a unified opinion; if not possible, the mother's view should be given more weight. He emphasizes considering only proposals involving someone who is Torah observant.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write about a marriage proposal of distinction and that your father's and mother's opinions are not aligned on this matter. You should ask your parents to speak with each other and come to a unified opinion. If they cannot reach an agreement, in such cases more consideration should be given to the mother's opinion.

It is understood and obvious that in general one should only consider a distinguished proposal when the person in question is observant of Torah and mitzvos in daily life.

At an auspicious time, all those you write about will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory.

With blessings for good news and a kosher and joyous Pesach holiday.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that unity between parents is important in marriage decisions; if agreement cannot be reached, the mother's view takes precedence. Above all, only proposals from those who are Torah observant should be considered.
