Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moharamz Shai' HaLevi
Shalom u'Vrachah!
Thank you very much for the citation regarding the esteemed Yaavetz. See Pri Etz Chaim, Shaar HaShabbat, end of chapter 21 and in the section of the Arizal before Minchah of Shabbat where it says: "This was the custom of the early ones." And in Taamei HaMitzvos Vaetchanan of the Arizal, he would study six paths in halachah corresponding to the six days of creation and one in sod (mystical teachings) corresponding to Yom Kippur.
Moharamz Shai': Greenglass, Montreal. Additional letters to him—above letter 8688 and as referenced in notes there.
Regarding the citation about the esteemed Yaavetz: In his letter: Harav Yaakov Zilberman Shai', sofer stam, showed me what he recently found in glosses and novellae on Gittin (in the large Shas edition, Vilna format) by the great Rabbi Yaakov Emden z"l on daf 60a: Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish would study Sifra d'Agadeta, and it says there: It seems to me that Sefer Shel Atz (or Etz?) and Chochmat HaEmet is what we call Kabbalah. During weekdays they would only delve into laws and halachot to know what should be done in Israel; on Shabbat they did not engage in laws and halachot because they are difficult to master. As it says: One does not teach a virgin (at first?) on Shabbat because it is difficult. On Shabbat they would study words of Aggadah which draw the heart because of Oneg Shabbat (the delight of Shabbat), and the sanctity of the day helps one understand hidden wisdom. It is holy of holies. And they said: If you wish to recognize Who spoke and brought the world into being—engage in Aggadah. And this is not Aggadah as stories called Haggadah with a hei." End quote.
And seemingly this is proof for what is brought in Kuntres Etz Chaim that on holy Shabbat, the day is dedicated to learning Chassidus.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Shabbat is especially suited for studying deeper Torah teachings such as Aggadah and Chassidus, citing classical sources like Yaavetz and Arizal who emphasize dedicating this holy day to spiritual wisdom rather than legal discussions.
