Deed Versus Intention in Torah and Mitzvos

The Rebbe explains that while intention is important, the actual performance of mitzvos is essential. Good intentions alone do not fulfill a mitzvah; action is required. This applies to all areas of Torah and mitzvos, whose purpose is to enliven the G-dly soul.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 24th of Menachem Av, regarding the question about the Torah of the Jewish people, its commandments, etc., and which path is preferable, etc.

Our Sages have informed us in their teachings that action is primary. Even though it is obvious that the Merciful One desires the heart, nevertheless (as expressed in the style brought in sefarim), someone who has the best intentions but does not actually give charity to a poor person has not fulfilled the mitzvah of tzedakah and has transgressed the command "do not harden your heart," etc. In contrast, one who gives tzedakah not for its own sake still sustains the soul of the poor person and his family.

(In terms of moral teaching) this applies to all matters of Torah and mitzvos, whose content is to give life to the hungry and thirsty—that is, the G‑dly soul within a Jew that hungers and thirsts to fulfill its Creator's commandments.

I strongly hope that these questions are theoretical only; surely your conduct in daily life aligns with our Torah's instructions—the Torah of life—and with observance of its commandments about which it is said "and you shall live by them."

With blessing for good news in all mentioned above.

It is simply impossible for there to be—as it says—true "identification" with Hashem together with rebellion against His command?!

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while heartfelt intention matters, fulfilling mitzvos through concrete action is essential. Good intentions alone do not suffice; true connection with Hashem comes through living according to His commandments.
