Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter from Sunday of Parshas Re'eh and the previous one, and please forgive me that due to much preoccupation I have not acknowledged their receipt until now....
I was pleased with your interest in the situation of the shochtim in our camp, although I was very distressed by the events and matters that are not as they should be, which you mention in your letter. Apparently your intention is regarding Shulchan Aruch. Certainly these days will be an opportunity to speak with several others among Anash who can get involved in this matter, and I hope that ultimately it will be possible to gradually correct the situation. Of course, I will not mention that the initial report came from you.
May Hashem grant you success in your studies and sacred work without any obstacle, G‑d forbid. It is also known what our Sages say: "Ein veshachat ela umashach" (there is no 'and he slaughtered' except 'and he drew'), meaning—as is understood simply—the act of shechitah is to prepare the flesh of an animal or bird so it can be elevated from the level of animal to human (since it becomes part of a person's blood and flesh). So too should you accomplish this spiritually: to draw forth and elevate the animal soul to the level of Adam—which is from "adamah laElyon" (earthly towards Above), as explained in Shnei Luchot HaBrit page 7b and in Sefer Asarah Maamarot, Maamar Im Kol Chai part II siman 33.
With blessings for a good inscription and sealing for you and all your household,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe encourages discreet action to improve communal matters while drawing a parallel between physical shechitah and spiritual self-elevation—reminding us that our efforts should refine both our environment and our own animal soul.
