Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 11 Elul, with the pidyon nefesh that will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal lehe nbgm zya. In it you write about your ailment and the treatment suggested by the doctor, which you postponed until after the upcoming holy day. You ask whether it is possible to delay it until after the upcoming festival of Sukkot.

In general, regarding the ailment you described, there is not much difference and it can easily be postponed for another two weeks, as your heart desires for good. Of course, the final decision in this matter belongs to the doctor since Torah has given permission to heal. But certainly if you explain your reason to him, he will fulfill your wish in this matter.

Surely you know all this; nevertheless I felt obligated to point out that there are various ways of carrying out the treatment and their halachic implications according to Shulchan Aruch—some ways are permitted and others not. As above—at an auspicious time you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law in general and for a speedy and complete recovery in particular.

These days are the days of Elul—the month of mercy and favor—favor like in earlier days.

With honor and blessing for good news and for being inscribed and sealed for good.

Summary

The Rebbe writes that while medical procedures can sometimes be delayed according to halachah and personal desire, ultimate authority rests with the doctor. He encourages open communication with one's physician and highlights that different methods may have different halachic statuses.
