Shalom u'Vrachah!
My response to your previous letter you surely received in time. On a related note and as an introduction: it is well known the demand and instructions from our Rebbeim, the Nesi'im, that a Jew must do his matters with joy and gladness of heart. Not only must he do so, but he can do so; and not only can one do this with acceptance of the yoke, but when there is proper contemplation, one can even explain this to the animal soul itself—so much so that even the intellect of the animal soul understands it and agrees to it.
To my great surprise, in every one of your letters—despite many positive changes from one to another—the common thread is an extreme dissatisfaction with your situation in... both materially and spiritually. And no matter how much is written about success in matters of Judaism, it is immediately added that things are not as they should be and that it could be—and must be—different.
It is understood that the matter of shlichus—the mission—is intended not only to bring Judaism to... nor just as a favor for the Jews there; rather, primarily it brings benefit and goodness to the one who does it in his own personal matters... Just as in all human actions, perhaps also here your decision could have been different or in another manner. Therefore I want to emphasize again what should be self-understood: this matter of traveling for shlichus is not meant to force someone against their will. Even more so—it is clear that after a trial period of a year or more, there should not be any element of compulsion; this also affects the success of the matter.
The intention of all the above is that regarding your decision for the future, you should feel completely free—in being (together with your husband HaRav sh"y) in... just as if you were now in Brooklyn and had yet to travel there. After proper contemplation on this matter, inform me openly of your decision; naturally, we will arrange things according to your decision.
May it be G‑d's will—Who watches over each individual with Divine Providence—to lead you together with your husband HaRav sh"y for good in all details: goodness that is visible and revealed both materially and spiritually together.
Blessings for good news.
Because of the sanctity of the festival, His Honor the Rebbe shlita did not sign personally; I am signing on his behalf. The secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that serving with joy is essential and achievable through proper mindset. Decisions about shlichus must come from genuine freedom and thoughtful reflection—not coercion—ensuring both spiritual fulfillment and personal well-being.
