Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter from Sunday with astonishment, in which you write about the letters that were referenced in my previous letter. I am surprised because at first I thought perhaps it was a mistake or someone had led you into error regarding this matter. Yet your letter comes to confirm once again that it is true that these letters are from the Rogatchover Gaon—a claim that is absolutely and entirely unfounded.
It is certainly unnecessary to state that thousands of letters, responsa, and pages of chiddushei Torah exist from the Rogatchover Gaon, spanning many decades. The common denominator in all these letters and Torah innovations—without exception—is his unique style, which anyone can recognize, as well as what is definitely not his. The letters printed in the book Dovav Sifsei Yesheinim are written in a style completely opposite—most decisively—from that of the Rogatchover.
The idea that he would instruct someone else to write on his behalf and then sign it, or that due to many complaints or for some benefit he would change his style, or anything else that would force him out of his character—this is contrary to the style and conduct of the Rogatchover throughout his entire life. It is also entirely contrary—most absolutely—to his conduct over decades and specifically in this point from which he never deviated during all those years.
I am certain not only would he not want to teach or speak in another style, but he could not do so [and furthermore—even if it were possible for the Rogatchover himself to come and testify that he wrote these letters, one should not believe him nor heed his voice].
I have written all this at length because I fear from your above-mentioned letter that perhaps you will write similarly to others—to assert regarding what was printed—that these letters are from the Rogatchover Gaon. It is my duty to point out that it is very much proper—and especially so—to refrain from this, because as stated above there is no doubt whatsoever that these letters are not from the Rogatchover. Please forgive me for these expressions if they are perhaps less than diplomatic.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches us to uphold truth and accuracy when attributing Torah writings. Even when faced with widespread claims or pressure, one must maintain integrity and avoid spreading unfounded information about great Torah figures.
