Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your two letters and following the blessing for the new year which you have surely already received, you write regarding the education of your son shlita. You mention that a doctor suggests arranging things so that he reduces his Torah studies in order to increase his involvement in gymnastics and activities related to development.

Since our Torah is called a Torah of Life—meaning literally life in this world and full life, i.e., healthy, complete, and good—it is understood that it is not advisable to change the schedule in a way that would reduce what is dedicated to Torah study. Especially since this is also connected with matters of fear of Heaven. Rather, you should speak with the doctor so that during times free from the aforementioned study, activities beneficial according to nature can be arranged for him.

It is also clear and simple that you need to explain this matter to your wife in an appropriate manner. The main thing is that her heart should be confidently trusting in Hashem Who watches over each individual with Divine Providence; by not changing or reducing your son's time within the framework of cheder (Jewish school), it will certainly add to his health even in a literal sense.

This should also be explained to the doctor: The school where they want to enroll your son is surely mixed with non-Jewish children (and perhaps most are such), and one must be concerned about complications (complications) for the child's soul if he spends most of his time and education there. Especially since, despite claims otherwise, anti-Semitism unfortunately exists everywhere—and even more so among children who do not hide it as much—and this is well known.

May it be G‑d's will that you share good news regarding all of the above as well as concerning your wife's health—may she live long.

All of the above applies if through pleasant ways you achieve your wife's full agreement on this matter. In any case, it is worthwhile to explain all of this to the doctor and at least diplomatically express some mild surprise at her suggesting such things to your wife before speaking with you first in order to clarify everything—since it is not always possible to know what goes on between husband and wife. All the more so because lack of such knowledge can cause complications between people—not only physical ones but also emotional ones.

This also applies regarding your wife's own soul: since by her nature and upbringing she is religious, it is possible that soon she may wonder or doubt whether she did right by changing her son's studies and education or not.

With blessings for good tidings and a good inscription (in the Book of Life).

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Torah study should remain central in a child's life for both spiritual and physical well-being. Medical advice should be integrated thoughtfully without compromising Jewish values or education, always considering both parents' perspectives and emotional impact.
