Haraha"ch iy"a nu"n his work is heavenly work Shlomo Chaim
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from before Rosh Chodesh Elul with its enclosures as well as your previous one, in which you write at length about the situation in the holy yeshivah where Divine Providence has granted you success to serve there as a mashpia.
It is understood and obvious that what I write from here about the great importance of education in purity is not at all a reason to cancel classes or to nullify the general framework—especially since only a very small portion are truly fit for proper education, and it is clear that only a small part are approved by the relevant offices, etc.
Regarding what you wrote about the difference when people were sent from here to outlying cities versus the situation in Eretz HaKodesh—this distinction should be explained to those there, not here. Indeed, this is primarily the role of a mashpia: to establish students in the true intent of our Rebbeim regarding each individual. Most importantly, what is lacking in your letter is any indication of effort to uproot and eradicate certain assumptions held by some of our Sephardic brethren—that circumstances once forced them to involve their children at a young age in earning a livelihood until habit became second nature. The magnitude of effort required to uproot such ingrained habits is clear—and this too is among the duties of a mashpia in Chassidus.
Regarding what you wrote about the student pilpul booklet—that it should not contain chiddushim (novellae), etc.—I do not know on what basis this is said; the booklet should contain explanations rather than chiddushim. Surely you have seen booklets printed here where the main emphasis is on explanation rather than novelty—and if only this were also done regarding nigleh (revealed Torah), not just Chassidus.
You wrote that it suffices for them to understand matters simply and nothing more should be demanded—if indeed this is so, it would be distressing; however, I hope this is not actually the case. Much more should be demanded than what you wrote—except for excluding chiddushim as above—because that is not the correct approach to study even in nigleh (as explained in Kuntres Etz HaChayim), and certainly not in Chassidus. If only they had been printing explanations in Chassidus all along—it would have given special enthusiasm both to students and their mentors, and most importantly would have drawn many more into proper study of Chassidus—not just because yeshivah routine compels them…
I am sending this letter urgently especially regarding this last point—for as stated above it is essential that such a booklet be published promptly and that the mashpia devote himself also to this even though action itself remains primary.
May it be G‑d's will that these days of Elul—a time of favor as stated by Admor HaZaken when the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy shine forth—be utilized so that students are aroused to learn both nigleh and Chassidus with depth and analysis; then certainly many matters will be published in such booklets…
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that a mashpia must actively foster deep Torah learning and help uproot negative habits within students. He emphasizes publishing explanatory works over novel insights alone and encourages striving for higher standards in both revealed Torah and Chassidus study.
