Havavac"h iy"a nu"n etc. Menachem Yisrael

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 24th of Sivan with its enclosures. Many thanks for your gift—the maamarim and sacred letters of our holy Rebbeim. Certainly you will continue your good practice in this matter. It is known what our Sages said: "Milta Albisheihu Yakira" (a matter clothed is precious), especially when it concerns the teachings of our Rebbeim. This is clear.

At an auspicious time I will mention all those about whom you wrote at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal nishmaso Eden, each one for what he needs according to your letter's content. May it be G‑d's will that you share good news in this regard—good that is visible and revealed.

The bichel in your handwriting was received, containing at its head Part One of Sefer HaTanya with variations from the printed edition—and afterwards maamarim of Admor HaZaken. Many thanks again for this. Your comment that perhaps it was copied from forged versions does not seem correct to me at all; there is no harmful change there—rather it appears to be missing some parts, perhaps some leaves are missing from a certain place. It could be from an early edition of Tanya. This is not the place to elaborate.

Regarding what you wrote again about the matter of "Uvenucho": At first it seemed that the questioner sought to clarify truth and wanted an answer to his difficulty. But in this letter—continuing previous questions—it seems that is not his intent; rather just to challenge. It is astonishing and greatly surprising when someone asks (perhaps even objects) regarding Rabbeinu HaZaken, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch—accepted among all Israel—even among those who follow their own teachers—in such a manner: lacking respect. That is, before questioning or challenging he does not consider whether there is even a basis for his question or objection. This also explains my astonishment at his writing: "Is there an answer to the above question?"—for he himself should have answered that there is no question here at all. And certainly there is no need to ask specifically from overseas.

Since I do not know why he did not answer as stated above, I will briefly respond again to your letter point by point:

a) The challenger claims: "Regarding 'Al Tevahel...' etc., it does not apply to verses from Torah." This has no basis—for this phrase is a verse in Tanach and thus applies also to verses in Tanach. Moreover, this follows plainly from Scripture itself: it does not say these matters are untrue or undesirable—only that words should be few rather than many; meaning the only issue is unnecessary excess—not more than that. The second verse adds that with many words one can come to further issues; this is clear.

b) "Nowhere did Admor HaZaken omit verses from Torah etc., except out of concern for interruption." This too has no basis—for anyone who looks even superficially at Rabbeinu HaZaken's Siddur sees many places where he omits verses etc., even though they are recited in various other versions. To begin with: In mitzvah of tefillin he does not bring "Ve'erastich Li...", omits "Patach Eliyahu", Parshas HaKiyor—and similarly elsewhere; at Birkat Hamazon's end etc.

c) RIK did not bring "Yehalelu" in his Siddur but Admor HaZaken did include it. Even if RIK had omitted it, it appears in Siddur R' Shmuel Marashkov (a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov), as well as all siddurim starting with Rav Amram Gaon—so how can this be a challenge against Admor HaZaken? More importantly—it shows how questions are being asked: In RIK's Siddur "Yehalelu" appears—see Shabbat prayers! Apparently the challenger looked only at weekday prayers and did not find "Yehalelu", missing that on weekdays there is no return of the Sefer Torah to the ark at all! If one were to follow RIK's Siddur literally, then according to him there would be no returning the Torah scroll on weekdays!

Blessings for good news soon regarding both general and personal matters together.
