Shalom u'Vrachah!
After the longest break, your letter was received, which you finished writing on Chanukah and has just now arrived. In it you write in detail about your holy work in education according to the purity of holiness at the yeshivah as well as with the women's group you teach.
Certainly, the great value of this involvement needs no explanation, as it is clearly stated in our holy Torah in many places. Surely your wife also knows about this matter, since you write that she agrees with several aspects of your work. You conclude your letter by saying there are complaints that you devote too much time to this work, which affects the necessary attention for your children as well as household matters in general, and you ask my opinion on this.
In general it is understood and obvious that it is impossible to set a fixed rule—that is, a set conduct for every single day—since circumstances change and accordingly so does responsibility, both regarding communal matters and household matters. But it is clear that a person must dedicate some of his time to communal work—even those who must devote much time to their home affairs; especially regarding children's education.
Accordingly, how exactly to divide time between communal matters and private work requires input from those present locally since a person is closest to himself—as our Sages say—and therefore cannot truly judge himself properly. As our Sages explain: because of one's closeness to oneself he cannot be trusted when speaking of his own virtues or faults. Therefore he should present the matter before three friends at his location; as it says: 'Salvation comes with much counsel.'
For my part I will only repeat again that work for the benefit of the community is necessary for everyone—especially for those whom Divine Providence has granted merit and who have already seen good fruits from their efforts in this area.
You surely know about the three well-known daily lessons in Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya; at least keep them from now on. Your wife should continue the fine custom of Jewish women to give charity before lighting candles every Friday afternoon and before Yom Tov.
With blessing for good news.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that balancing public service with family life requires thoughtful consideration and outside advice. Both communal involvement and family responsibilities are essential; regular Torah study and acts of charity help maintain this balance.
