Shalom u'Vrachah!
I read your letter from the 22nd of Kislev with great astonishment, in which you write as if there has been a change in my perspective regarding traveling on Israeli ships during Shabbos. It is understood and obvious that there is absolutely no reason to change my opinion at all, as I have explained at length in my previous letters to you, that my view is clear: it is absolutely forbidden, and the reasons and explanations for this are detailed in those aforementioned letters.
Regarding what you wrote about technical arrangements, I have also written clearly that with the current state of technology it is in no way possible for a ship to operate automatically in the true sense of the word—that is, without any human intervention throughout the entire twenty-four hours of Shabbos. Furthermore, not only are one or two people insufficient; rather, several people are required, and an important portion of them must be highly skilled mechanics.
Regrettably, I must point out a negative change that has occurred regarding this issue. According to reports I have received, several times last summer some of these ships sailed even on Shabbos itself (not from New York), and there are plans in the near future to organize a pleasure cruise lasting about two weeks. Reportedly, those overseeing kashrus and those leading prayers will also participate in these trips.
To tell the truth, I did not investigate the accuracy of these reports because, as mentioned above, my opinion is clear: even when departing on Sunday it is absolutely forbidden. I only mention this change to illustrate the prevailing trend which unfortunately is moving not toward improving the situation but rather in the opposite direction. May Hashem enlighten the eyes and hearts of Israel.
With honor and blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe unequivocally maintains his prohibition against traveling on Israeli ships during Shabbos regardless of technical solutions or timing. He warns against leniencies and urges vigilance for true halachic observance.
