Shalom u'Vrachah!
After yet another very long pause, I received your letter from the 19th of Cheshvan, in which you write about your wife's mood regarding your move to... and attribute it to being alone there, etc. It is astonishing that even matters so visible to the naked eye are ignored by Anash—and not only that, but they seek convoluted explanations and interpretations.
My intention is simple: surely you remember when we discussed your move to..., it was connected—and I believe it was written explicitly once or twice—that upon your arrival there you would be involved in spreading Judaism in general and Chassidus in particular. If you tally all the years you've been there, on one hand you see the kindnesses of Hashem regarding influence from above; yet there is much neglect—especially regarding your work and your wife's work as suited to her—in spreading Judaism and Chassidus.
Therefore, it is natural—not just a mystical matter—that the relocation is not going smoothly; the reasons you write are only consequences and temptations from the yetzer hara to cover up the truth. I can imagine the excuses for lack or deficiency in this work: because so-and-so does not behave properly, or being preoccupied with livelihood, etc. But it's clear these aren't even real excuses:
a) Just because someone else isn't behaving properly—should that cause you to reduce your own efforts? Especially since, as mentioned above, success in livelihood depends on this very work.
b) Similarly regarding preoccupation with livelihood—the aforementioned work is what brings down blessing from above for one's needs and for the success of the relocation overall.
This makes it all the more puzzling: people invest tremendous effort into preparing natural vessels below to receive blessing but want to use this as an excuse for neglecting action regarding the source of blessing itself above. After all, there must be something to draw down into those vessels; focusing on secondary matters is trivial compared to focusing on what’s essential—and this should be clear.
It’s understood that none of this is meant to hurt anyone or merely as rebuke; rather it concerns the future and especially now—on one hand it’s easier than before to accomplish things locally regarding Chassidus; on the other hand—it’s now plainly visible how nothing substantial has been done for Chabad’s development: every activity was just a brief start that soon stopped—another action for a while then stopped again, etc.
May it be G‑d’s will that you will soon bring good news regarding all of the above—that is: expanding activities in all areas of Chassidus within your community until it reaches an overflowing manner (u’faratzta).
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true blessing comes from dedicating oneself to spreading Judaism and Chassidus. Material efforts alone are insufficient without spiritual action at their source; excuses should not deter one from fulfilling this vital mission.
