Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter—pan (pidyon nefesh)—without indication of when it was written—filled with complaints and describing your situation in the darkest colors. It is surprising that you have temporarily forgotten the words of our master the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya—a halachic authority in the hidden aspects of Torah—and the Shulchan Aruch—a halachic authority in the revealed Torah—in his holy book Tanya: that every matter of despair and sadness is a ploy and tactic of the yetzer hara to confuse a person from serving the Creator.
It is also explained there that "lefum gamla shichna" (the load matches the camel), and each person is given the ability, strength, and opportunity to follow the path of Torah and mitzvahs and to go from strength to strength.
Regarding what you wrote about light and a lantern to illuminate a dark path—the path is not dark at all. The matters are clarified in detail in Shulchan Aruch and Chassidus texts, even regarding specific details where the yetzer casts doubt; for these too there are many pieces of advice.
Two main pieces of advice: (a) It is known that the Mitteler Rebbe said one should have a good friend with whom to discuss spiritual matters; then there are two G‑dly souls against one animal soul. (b) Examine from which side the tactic comes: in anything beneficial that leads to practical avodah, any obstacle—even if it comes from something lofty—is only a tactic of the animal soul (see Hayom Yom 23 Sivan).
May it be G‑d's will that immediately upon receiving this letter you completely divert your mind from sighs and increase in positive actions. As our Rebbeim say: one positive action is better than a thousand sighs; how much more so are several good actions better than sighing. In a short time you will see you were entirely mistaken in your description of your situation—as long as you study diligently, keep yeshivah routines, and influence your friends likewise.
Blessings for good news in all mentioned above,
In the name of His Honor, our Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
P.S. Surely you know about the three well-known daily study portions—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—and at least from now on you should keep them.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that despair is a distraction from serving G‑d. Instead, focus on positive deeds, diligent learning, keeping good routines, and seeking support from friends—one good action outweighs many sighs.
