Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Friday in which you ask: a) What is the advice for proper intention in prayer? One should meditate before prayer—at least for a few moments—on before Whom he is about to pray. It is also appropriate to memorize from the beginning of Chapter 41 in Tanya until the word "HaMelech" (page 72), and before prayer to review this verbally or mentally in its content. Also, on weekdays before prayer, one should set aside some coins for charity.

b) What is the advice for Torah study and consistency in it? The aforementioned meditation is also helpful regarding Torah study. The main point in both matters is the thought that Torah, prayer, and all mitzvos were given for the benefit of man; within them lies his happiness both materially and spiritually.

c) Surely you know what is written in several works of our sages and greats: For proper intention in prayer it helps to pray from a siddur (prayer book), and when studying Torah one should articulate the words aloud—not just think them. Surely you know of the custom to say every day after morning prayers the daily portion of Tehillim for the month—as divided among the days of the month—and you observe this or at least will do so from now on.

With blessing for good news,
In the name of the Rebbe Shlita,
Mazkir

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that mindful preparation enhances both prayer and Torah study. Reviewing Tanya passages and giving charity before praying help with focus; articulating words aloud strengthens learning. Recognizing that mitzvos are for our benefit brings joy both physically and spiritually.
